Silent stars

Тихі зорі

⏱ ~4 min reading

High, high in the sky, much higher than birds fly, and even higher than the whitest clouds float, live special stars. They are called silent stars.

If you look at the night sky carelessly, you won't see them. But you will see bright stars—the ones that twinkle merrily and loudly, like lanterns at a fair. Those stars are for joy. They shine for fishermen returning home at night. They shine for travelers looking for their way. They shine for lovers gazing up at the sky.

And the quiet stars are for someone else.

Their job is to protect dreams. Children's dreams. The most tender, the most fragile, the most precious.

Silent stars do not shine brightly. They only flicker faintly - like a tiny candle behind a thin curtain. They protect their light. Because they need to shine for a long, long time, all night, without stopping. Until the very morning.

Every night, the silent stars go out to their service. As soon as the last light sets over the horizon, as soon as mommy covers the children with a blanket, as soon as the table lamp in the nursery turns off — the silent stars stir. They watch.

They make sure that children's dreams are not hidden behind the clouds.

Clouds are different. Most clouds are kind, soft, like cotton wool. They are pleasant to look at during the day. But sometimes there are rude clouds. Thick, dark, heavy ones - the kind that want to take away a child's sleep. Cover it, hide it, take it somewhere.

But the silent stars won't let them in.

As soon as such a cloud approaches your window, a quiet star will quietly come out to meet it. It will not scold. It will not scream. Quiet stars never scream. It will simply shine softly with its thin ray, and the cloud will be ashamed, turn aside, and swim away to look for other things to do. Away. Away from your crib.

And if it happens that the baby suddenly screams in his sleep - he dreamed something incomprehensible, or there was a noise outside the window - the quiet star immediately sends a ray of peace. The ray falls directly on the cheek, on the blanket, on the clenched fist - and the baby sighs, returns to the barrel and again plunges into a good, warm sleep.

The silent stars work tirelessly. They don't sleep themselves. But the children sleep soundly - thanks to them.

And you know what's the strangest thing? Every child in the world has their own — special — quiet star. Only their own.

When you were born, little one, your quiet star took its place in the sky. It chose a corner to see your window. It sat there - and since then it has not left you for a single night.

She was with you when you were still very tiny and slept in a cradle. She was there when you learned to roll over on your stomach for the first time. She was there when you outgrew the cradle and moved to a big baby bed. She will be with you when you grow up, and when you go to school, and when you become an adult. She will not leave you. Silent stars - they are like that. Faithful until the very morning of life.

If you want, go quietly to the window before going to bed. Stand on tiptoe. Lean your forehead against the cool pane and look up.

First you'll see the bright stars. Then the moon, if there is one. And then, if you look closely, you'll notice a tiny, barely noticeable twinkle somewhere off to the side. Very small. Like a spark from a candle.

This is her. Yours.

Nod to her lightly. Not loudly—just nod your head, as if greeting an old acquaintance. Whisper, «Thank you for looking after her.» She’ll hear. The silent stars hear even the quietest whispers. They even hear thoughts.

And then — go back to the crib. Get under the covers. Adjust the pillow. Stretch out your legs. Close your eyes.

She will stand guard. All night. Until the morning. And when the sun rises, she will go to rest, because even the quiet stars have their day. And the next evening she will come out again. Good night, little one. Sleep peacefully. You are being watched over.
