The killer whale is a good friend

In the cold blue sea, where the waves rose like mountains and the water smelled of strong salt, there swam a killer whale. Her name was Blackfin. Her back was black as polished stone, her belly was white as a winter cloud, and on her sides were two white spots that looked like small oval windows.

The killer whale was big. Very big. When it surfaced to breathe, its fin cut through the water like a sail, and above it, with a loud "pshshsh," a fountain rose from under its breath.

Everyone at sea was afraid of her.

The fish would run away as soon as they heard the distant "woof-woof" of her tail. The seals, seeing her black back, would freeze and hide under the ice. Even the pelicans, soaring over the water, would cautiously circle the place where Blackfin might swim.

"Orca!" they whispered to each other. "Let's run away! It's a scary orca!"

And Chornoplavyk herself swam to herself and sighed. She heard everything. The water in the sea is thin - sounds carry far.

«"Why is everyone afraid of me?" she thought. "I don't hurt anyone.".

And she really didn't hurt anyone. She ate fish, like all killer whales, but carefully, without greed. She didn't hunt seals - she had an older sister who once made friends with a family of seals and taught Blackfin to treat them with respect. She didn't pay attention to small fish. She loved dolphins and often swam in races with them. Only few people knew about it. They saw a black back with white spots - and immediately: oh, it's scary!

One gloomy morning, Blackfin was sailing along the icy shore. Low gray clouds hung over the sea, a cold wind blew, and the water looked like dark glass. Suddenly, she heard a faint cry somewhere nearby.

— Ma-a-amo! Mom, where are you? Ma-a-amo!

The black seal turned her head. Amidst the waves that were rolling back and forth, a small seal pup was floundering. It was very tiny. It was gray, with black beady eyes, and wet whiskers. It had lost its mother and was now swimming, whimpering softly, not knowing where to go.

The blackfin was about to swim closer, and then she saw something else. From the depths, quietly and smoothly, a shadow emerged. Gray, sharp, with a triangular fin.

Shark.

She swam straight towards the seal pup. She took her time. She knew the little one wouldn't go anywhere.

The seal pup froze. It saw the shark. Its little black eyes became round with terror.

«"The end," it thought. "I will never see my mother again.".

And at that moment the water parted.

The blackfin appeared between the seal pup and the shark—big, black, powerful. It slapped its tail across the water so that the spray flew up a meter. It made a deep, low hum that made everything in the water tremble. The shark, accustomed to being strong, saw it and froze. It thought. And quickly, quickly turned the other way. In a moment it was gone.

The Blackfin slowly turned to the seal pup. It was shivering and looking at her with its big, big eyes.

"Don't be afraid, little one," said the killer whale gently. "I won't hurt you. I've only chased away that bad fish. Come on my back.".

"You're... you're a killer whale," the seal pup whispered. "You're eating us.".

"No, not me," smiled Blackfin. "I'm just swimming. Now we'll swim to your mother. Get down.".

The seal pup hesitated. It thought. And then — carefully, quietly — it swam closer and climbed onto the killer whale’s broad black-and-white back. Its skin was warm, smooth, with a thin strip of salt along the edges. The seal pup settled in comfortably and relaxed a little.

The black-throated diver swam away. Not quickly, so as not to scare her. She just gently rocked the seal pup on the waves.

“Where are we going?” the little one asked.

"To where your pod lives," the killer whale replied. "I know the place. The dolphins told me.".

An hour later they reached a large ice floe, on which lay many seals. Among them was a large one, with anxious eyes. It was the mother.

Seeing the killer whale with her baby on its back, the mother seal froze. She didn't understand what she was seeing.

“I… I don’t understand,” she said quietly. “Orcas eat seals.”.

The black-finned fish swam very close to the ice floe, carefully lowered itself and let the seal pup slip into the water. The little one swam to his mother. She grabbed him with her flippers, sniffed him, and kissed his little wet nose.

The killer whale just smiled.

"Not everyone is the same," she said quietly. "Orcas have hearts too. It's just not always visible behind their teeth.".

She slowly turned and swam away. The mother seal watched her for a long, long time. Then she said quietly to her baby:

"Don't judge by appearance, son. We learned that today.".

The seal pup grew up. He became an adult seal. And every time he saw a black back with white spots in the sea, he didn't run away. He told the others:

"This is Blackfly. She saved me. She's good.".

And so, little by little, something began to change in the sea. The animals no longer ran away immediately when they saw someone scary. First, they looked - am I wrong? Is there a kind heart hidden behind the scary appearance?

Because often, as it turns out, that's where it's hiding.

✨ Don't judge by appearance - behind a formidable appearance there is often a kind heart ✨
