Mirror Wizard

Чарівник дзеркала

In a far, far away land, among pines and mosses, stood an old, very old castle. Its walls were overgrown with ivy, the towers seemed to lean from time, and the doors creaked so gently that they sang a lullaby. No one had lived in the castle for a long time - only spiders washed their thin lace on the chandeliers, and mice ran between the stone slabs.

But in one room—the farthest, at the very top—there was a mirror. A large one, in a carved frame of darkened gold. It was magical. Once a year, on the same night—the shortest summer night, when the stars were especially close to the ground—a little wizard would emerge from it.

He was very old, with a white beard down to his waist and a blue cap with silver stars. He walked quietly, as if he didn't touch the floor. In his hand he held a small candlestick with a blue candle that never went out.

The wizard would come out of the mirror, walk around the empty castle, look out the window at the forest, the moon, the distant fields, and then return to the mirror. And then he would ask one question, as quietly as a leaf whispers:

— Who in the world loves others the most this year?

The mirror was silent for a minute. Then two. Then it dimmed, as if deep in thought—and finally it shone with a silver light, and called a name. Just one. For a whole year.

The wizard nodded, smiled into his beard, and disappeared into the mirror—until the next summer night.

And the one the mirror called received a gift. Not a big one. Not noticeable. Just - he became a little happier. No miracles. No flying horses. No chests of gold. Just life fell more gently on his shoulders.

This year the mirror was silent for a long time. The wizard waited patiently, holding a candle. And then the mirror spoke:

— Sofia. A little girl from Kashtanova Street, house number twelve. Seven years old. Loves others more than herself.

The wizard smiled.

"Show me her," he asked quietly.

The mirror flickered - and a picture appeared in it. A small kitchen. A light bulb above the table. A woman sat at the table - Sofia's mother - and cried quietly, her head bowed on her hand. A man sat next to her - Sofia's father - wrapped in an old blanket. He was coughing. On the table was one plate of borscht - for three.

And little Sofia, in a blue sweater with a bunny on it, sat next to her mother. She didn't say anything. She just stroked her mother's hair with her tiny hand — slowly, gently, like stroking a kitten.

"Everything will be okay, Mom," Sophia whispered. "I love you. Very, very much.".

Mom couldn't answer - she just nodded. And Sofia continued to stroke, stroke, stroke. And didn't ask for anything.

The wizard in the castle looked at this picture for a long time. Then he took off his cap, ran his hand over his beard and said:

"See, mirror? There she is. No castles, no princesses. Just a little girl who loves.".

"Yes," agreed the mirror. "She expects nothing in return. That's why she deserves it.".

The wizard nodded, quietly turned to the mirror, and disappeared into its silvery depths.

And in the little house on Kashtanova Street, morning came. Sofia woke up and didn't notice anything. She didn't know that the mirror had called her name. She didn't know that all over the world—invisibly—little things were starting to happen. Just for her.

This morning, Sofia came home from school and found a new penny on the sidewalk. Shiny as if it had just come from the mint. She bent down, picked it up, and put it in her pocket.

“Mom, look,” she said in the evening.

— Oh, you're lucky, daughter.

The next day, their neighbor, Uncle Vasyl, who never really visited them, knocked on the door with a basket of apples.

"I have some left over from the garden. Take it, don't waste it.".

Mom wanted to refuse — she was embarrassed to take it. But Sofia had already stretched out her hands.

— Thank you, Uncle Vasily!

A week later at school, the teacher stopped Sofia after class.

"I wanted to tell you that your drawing about the family is very, very good. I hung it on the stand. You did a great job.".

Sofia blushed with happiness. She had tried so hard.

And my mother found a new job. Not right away. A month later. In a small store not far from home — and it was convenient, and the pay was decent, and the colleagues were nice.

And dad was slowly recovering. The doctors found the right medicine. The cough slowly subsided.

Sofia didn't connect these things. She was little. She just noticed: life had become warmer. The sun was peeking through the windows more often. Mom started humming in the kitchen. Dad laughed when she told what the neighbor boy had said.

And Sofia continued to love. She stroked her mother's head when she was tired. She brought her father tea when he coughed. She shared a candy with Olesya, who didn't have any. She picked up a sparrow from a puddle and put it on a branch. She didn't think she was doing anything special. She just didn't know how to do anything else.

In the castle, in the far room, a speck of dust settled on the mirror. The wizard slept in silver—until the next summer night. And while he slept, his magic worked quietly in the little house on Kashtanova.

Because this is real magic. Not stars from a wand. Not flying brooms. Not potions in cauldrons. But the love that you give — and that comes back to you in tiny joys. A penny on the sidewalk. A neighbor's smile. A teacher's praise.

Loving others is the greatest spell the world knows. Bigger than all the wizarding books. And the best thing is that anyone can cast it—even a little seven-year-old girl in a blue bunny sweater.

When a year later the wizard came out of the mirror again and asked his question - the mirror flickered and called another name. A little boy from across the ocean. Because the magic went on. But Sofia stayed with her forever.

Because those who have learned to love never unlearn.
