Sing for Grandma

Заспівати для бабусі

Grandma Tonya caught a cold. Not a bad one, but enough to keep her in bed, drinking tea with raspberries, and not even going out to the store. Marinka and her mother came to visit her on Saturday, bringing honey, lemons, and warm socks.

Grandma's apartment smelled, as always, of an old book, marigolds on the windowsill, and something warm from the kitchen. Marinka loved this smell. It was the most familiar to her.

Grandma was sitting in bed, propped up with pillows. Her voice was a little hoarse and her nose was pink.

“Grandma, how are you?” Marinka asked.

"It's nothing, my dear. I'll lie down for a day or two and I'll be as good as new again.".

Mom went to the kitchen to make tea. Marinka stayed with her grandmother.

Grandma stroked Marinka's head. Grandma's hand was thin, with prominent veins, and warm.

Grandma smiled — and Marinka saw that Grandma was a little sad. Not very sad — just a little. As happens when a person has a cold and wants someone to be near.

— Grandma, would you like to sing?

Marinka herself was surprised how she said it. Because in reality, she was ashamed.

Marinka had a thin voice. It was beautiful — her mother said. But Marinka was shy to sing in front of adults. And singing even to her grandmother — it was a little scary.

«"What if I sing badly?"»

But the grandmother already looked at Marinka - and her eyes lit up.

"Do you sing? I didn't know.".

Marinka lowered her eyes. She played with the edge of her grandmother's bedspread.

"A little. It's a shame.".

Grandma was silent. Then she said quietly:

— Do you know what my grandmother taught me? She said: "If you sing for someone you love, your voice can't be bad. Because it's not the voice there, it's the heart there.".

Marinka raised her eyes.

— Is that true?

— True.

Marinka took a deep breath. She thought about which song she knew best. The lullaby her mother sang at night about a little bear falling asleep on a branch immediately popped into her head.

"Grandma, I'm not very loud. Can I?"

"As you wish, my dear. Just for me.".

Marinka folded her arms. She closed her eyes — so as not to look at her grandmother. Because it was easier for her that way.

And she sang softly:

— Sleep, sleep, little bear cub,
It's dark outside the window, the little bunny is already sleeping.
The forest whispers in its sleep, the moon shines quietly,
And the mother bear hugs, tickles, rolls...

The voice came out tiny. Thin. But Marinka sang until the end. Verse. Chorus. Another verse.

When she finished, she blinked her eyes. She looked at her grandmother.

Grandma was crying. Quietly. Small tears that ran down her cheeks onto the pillow.

"Grandma! Did I upset you?"

Grandma shook her head. She smiled through her tears.

— It didn't make me sad, my dear. It made me emotional. These are different tears. These are when you're really, really good inside — but your heart can't hold it.

Marinka hugged her grandmother. Carefully, because her grandmother was sick. She pressed her cheek against her grandmother's shoulder. Her grandmother smelled of chamomile tea and softness.

"Thank you, daughter. You have no idea how warm your singing makes me feel.".

"Can I still do it?"

"You can. As much as you want.".

Marinka sang another song. And another. Grandma listened with her eyes closed and smiled slightly.

When Mom returned from the kitchen with tea, Marinka was already singing the third song. Mom stopped at the door. She didn't go in. She stood and listened. Her eyes were shining too.

On the way home, Marinka walked with her mother along the sidewalk.

— Marinka, you made the best medicine for grandma today.

— Which ones?

— My song.

Marinka smiled.

— I was ashamed.

— I know.

— But she sang anyway.

— Because you love your grandmother.

Marinka nodded. She walked alongside her mother and thought: it turns out that love is stronger than shame. Love seems to quietly push you forward — and you do things you wouldn't do on your own.

At home, Marinka asked her mother to write down the words to her grandmother's favorite songs. She decided that the next time she visited her grandmother, she would sing some more. Because her grandmother had the best smile when there was a quiet song in the room.

💡 Love is always a little bolder than shame.
