How to keep a promise

Maksymko sat on the rug and looked at the screen. The ship on the screen sails slowly, then faster, then — boom! — and you have to start over. The most interesting moment!

And it's quiet outside. Too quiet.

"Fish," he suddenly whispered.

He raised his head and looked at the clock. The hand showed half past five. And he had promised his neighbor Darynka to feed the fish at five — she and her dad had gone to visit her grandmother for two days and asked Maksym to take care of the aquarium.

"She looked at me like that," he muttered. "She said, 'Maximka, I'm counting on you.'".

The ship on the screen sailed on. But it wasn't as interesting anymore.

Maksymko turned around. On the back of the sofa sat a small owl in round glasses, looking at him attentively and without judgment. And next to him was a red squirrel in a pink scarf, holding an acorn tightly and impatiently tugging its fluffy tail.

"I'm Sophie," the owl said quietly.

"And I'm Solomiyka!" the squirrel picked up. "And your boat will wait, but the fish won't!"

Maksymko put down the tablet.

"I just forgot," he said. "I got so caught up in the game that I didn't notice the arrow go by.".

"It happens," said Owl Sophie. "It's not what you forgot that matters, it's what you feel right now.".

"It's not like he's doing anything," Maksymko admitted. "It's like he hasn't finished anything.".

"That's what conscience is," Sofiyka nodded. "It doesn't scold. It just reminds you: 'You gave your word.' Let's think together about how to do it right.".

Maksymko got up from the rug. He picked up the key to Darin's apartment, which was hanging on a hook by the door.

"Wait, I'll be quick," he told them.

"We're in no hurry," Solomiyka replied, and wag her tail again. "Well, almost nowhere.".

Обіцянка — маленька домовленість

1. A promise is a small agreement

When you say «I will do it» or «I will come» — a person begins to count on you. He plans his own, knowing that you are nearby. A promise is like a bridge between two people. As long as the word stands, the bridge holds.

2. Don't make hasty promises or overpromise.

Sometimes you want to say «yes» right away to make the person happy. But it’s better to stop for a second and think: can I really do it? Will there be time? A short pause before making a promise is not slowness, it’s responsibility.

Не обіцяй нашвидкуруч

"I once promised a friend I would bring him three acorns before sunset," Solomiyka confessed, clutching the acorn to her chest. "But I only found two. I didn't say anything. Wise, right?"

3. So as not to forget, leave yourself a sign

Memory is a wonderful thing, but sometimes it plays hide-and-seek. Write it on a piece of paper and stick it on the fridge. Ask your mom to remind you. Put a toy by the door as a signal. Even a small, visible sign keeps the promise alive.

4. If it's hard to do, take at least a small step.

Sometimes it seems: «There’s so much to do, I’d rather wait.» But waiting doesn’t mean doing it. Start with the smallest thing: open the door, pour the food, make the first move. The first step is always the hardest, then it gets easier.

Попередь чесно заздалегідь

5. If you can’t do it, tell us honestly and in advance.

Sometimes something really happens and you can’t do it. It’s not the end of the world — but then don’t be silent. Say it right away, don’t wait until the last moment. «I can’t because…» is honest. Silence is also an answer, but a bad one.

"If you can't, tell me!" Solomiyka exclaimed quietly. "Because I would have known better in advance and asked another friend. Have you agreed?"

6. Keeping your word builds trust.

Every time you keep a promise, people notice. Not right away, and not loudly. But gradually they start to know: "You can rely on Maksym." And this is a very valuable thing. Much more valuable than any game or any record.

Обіцянка самому собі теж важлива

7. A promise to yourself is also important

«Tomorrow I will start reading every day,» «I will clean my room without reminders,» «I will study a little every day» are also promises. Only those made to yourself. And if you know how to keep your word to yourself, keeping it to others becomes much easier.

Maksymko opened Darin's apartment with his key, found a jar of food on the shelf, and carefully poured in exactly as much as it indicated. The fish immediately swam to the surface and danced with their little fins.

"Sorry I'm late," he whispered to the aquarium. "I won't be back.".

The fish probably weren't offended. They just ate and sparkled in the light of the lamp—orange, silver, spotted.

When he got home, the tablet was still there. The ship was waiting on the screen.

But Maksymko first hung the key on a hook and wrote in his notebook: "Tomorrow — fish — at 5:00 p.m.".

And only then did he sit down to play. Now — with a calm heart.
