Why does a goldfish remember you for several months?
Have you heard the joke: "The memory of a goldfish is three seconds"? Well, this joke is a real fabrication. Goldfish have an amazing memory, and scientists have proven this in many experiments.
In 2003, a schoolboy from Australia named Rod McCabe conducted a simple experiment. He threw food into the aquarium, always in the same place and at the same time. After a few days, the fish knew: when you see a red circle on the wall of the aquarium - swim there, there will be food. After three weeks, Rod removed the circle. And when he put it back a whole month later - the fish immediately swam to the familiar sign! They remembered it.
Later, scientists from the UK showed even more. Goldfish learn to press a small lever to get food. And they remember this skill for up to 5 months! Some fish recognize the voice of their owner - the one who feeds them every day. When he approaches the aquarium, they joyfully rise to the surface.
Goldfish see in color - even better than you and me. They can distinguish between red, green, blue and even ultraviolet, which humans cannot see at all. Fish have a real brain with a part called the "telecephalon" - it is responsible for memory.
If you have a goldfish, try feeding it at the same time every day, saying something softly. After a week or two, you will see that as soon as you approach the aquarium, your fish will immediately swim towards you. Because it remembers you.
