Why do cranes dance in pairs and love each other for life?

Did you know that cranes dance? And they don't just stand there and flap their wings - no! They jump high into the sky, up to 2 meters high, spread their wings as if embracing the wind, bow to each other and throw tufts of grass into the air.

This is not just a game. This is a declaration of love. The young crane shows his chosen one: «I want to be with you forever.» And if she agrees, he dances with him.

And now the most amazing thing: cranes choose a mate for life. Up to 30 years together! That's almost as long as some people live in marriage. They build a nest together, hatch eggs together, and protect their chicks together.

Every spring, returning from warmer climes, the pair meet and dance again — as if to say, "I remember you. I love you. We're still together." Scientists call this dance a "fidelity ritual.".

Imagine: a crane flies thousands of kilometers from Africa to Ukraine. There are millions of birds in the sky. And he finds her, his little crane. By her voice, by her movements, by that special thing that only the two of them know.

If one of the pair dies, the other is often left alone for the rest of their lives. Cranes know how to grieve - their cry at such moments becomes muffled and lonely.
