How does a dog smell 100,000 times better than us?

Dogs have a sense of smell about 100,000 times better than humans. Our noses contain about 5 million olfactory cells. Dogs have 200 to 300 million! Bloodhounds have as many as 300 million. That's why these dogs work in the police: they find lost people after a trail that has been there for several days.

And now the most amazing thing. A dog sniffs with two nostrils separately! The left nostril and the right work independently, like two different "noses". Thanks to this, the dog understands not only WHAT kind of smell it is, but also FROM WHICH DIRECTION it is coming. It's like hearing sounds with two ears separately.

When you come home from school, your dog knows within 20 seconds: what you had for lunch, whether you petted another dog, whether you were upset. Yes, even your mood! After all, when we are worried, our body releases special substances that the dog catches with its nose.

Today, dogs are trained to sniff out cancer cells, low blood sugar, even COVID-19. One trained dog can "check" 250 people in an hour.

So when your pet meets you at the door and happily wags his tail, he already knows everything about you.
