Stonefish is the ocean's best camouflager

Imagine: you are walking through the shallow waters of a coral reef. In front of you are ordinary stones, covered in algae. But one of these «stones» is actually a living fish! It is a stonefish, the best camouflager in the ocean.

Its skin is uneven, rough, with bumps and spots. Just like a stone with moss and shells. It lies motionless on the bottom for hours, even days — and no one notices. Small fish swim calmly next to it… until they swim too close. Then — faster than the blink of an eye — the stonefish’s mouth opens and it swallows its prey in 0.015 seconds! That’s faster than you blink.

Scientists consider it the most toxic fish in the world. On its back there are 13 sharp spines, like cactus needles. It shows these spines only if someone accidentally steps on it - this is its protection from larger enemies. In nature, large fish and sharks know: no, no to stonefish.

Interestingly, the stonefish can live out of water for up to 24 hours! If the tide has receded, it lies calmly on a dry rock and waits for the water to return. Most fish die in 5 minutes without water. But this one can endure it for a whole day.

If you ever go to tropical seas — Australia, the Philippines, the Red Sea — remember: walk on the sand in special slippers. Don't step on the "stones" in the water. And don't touch the seabed with your hand. Every experienced swimmer does this.

The stone fish is not evil. It simply became a stone to survive in an ocean where everyone eats everyone.
