Why can a whale's song be heard thousands of kilometers away?

Now imagine: this giant opens its mouth not to roar or laugh, but to sing. Yes, whales sing real songs: long, with verses, repetitions, melodies. The song of one humpback whale can last 30 minutes, and it will repeat it without change for a whole day. Imagine singing the same song for 24 hours!

But that's not the most amazing thing. The voice of a blue whale is the loudest on the planet. 188 decibels! A jet engine is 140. Thunder is 120. A whale's voice is louder than anything you've ever heard. And here's why: it sings at very low frequencies that humans can barely hear. These sounds travel through the ocean like waves, never stopping. Scientists have measured that one whale can hear another 1,600 kilometers away — that's like from Kyiv to Paris!

And in 2015, a miracle happened: scientists noticed that a humpback whale song sung by one whale near Australia became a «trending hit» among all the whales on the east coast within a year—they adopted it from each other, just as we learn new songs from the radio. This was the first time in the animal world that «culture» was seen being transmitted thousands of kilometers away.

For a long time, people didn't know that whales could sing. It wasn't until the 1960s that the first song was recorded. Listen to it someday - it's like the voice of the ocean itself. Majestic, calm, ancient. Like the whisper of our planet.
