Why is a polar bear's fur transparent and its skin black?

Imagine: you are standing on the Arctic ice field, the temperature is -40°C, and there is a snowy desert all around. And suddenly you notice a huge bear - it seems to be snow-white. But here is the first secret: not a single hair on it is actually white! The fur of a polar bear is completely transparent, like tiny glass tubes. And the skin under this fur is a deep black color, like coal.

How does it work? The black skin absorbs the heat of the sun's rays, like a dark T-shirt in the summer. The transparent hairs are hollow inside - they are filled with air, which works like a thermos. And polar bears appear to be polar because the light reflects off these tubes in different directions, like snow. This is real camouflage among the ice!

An adult bear weighs up to 700 kilograms — as much as a small car. And under its skin it has a layer of fat 10 centimeters thick. Thanks to all this, it calmly swims in icy water for 60 kilometers without stopping. Its nose can smell a seal from 30 kilometers away!

People have long thought that bears are just white. And scientists who have studied their hair under a microscope have gasped in amazement. Nature came up with such a clever costume long before we invented thermoses and down jackets.

So the next time you see a photo of a polar bear, remember: it's actually black inside — and that's what helps it live where no one else would survive.
