A great white shark can smell one drop of blood in 10 million.

Imagine: you take 10 million drops of water into a bathtub, and then add just one drop of blood. A person won’t feel anything. But a great white shark can! Its nose is so sensitive that it can pick up smells in a ratio of 1 in 10,000,000. It’s like you could smell a chocolate crumb from a kilometer away.

Two-thirds of a shark's brain is dedicated to smell alone—more than to sight or hearing. Its nostrils don't breathe like ours, they only smell. Water enters through two holes in the front of its snout, passes through special folds—and the shark "reads" the ocean like we read a book.

But that’s not all. The great white shark has a sixth «superorgan»—tiny jelly-like droplets on its snout called the ampullae of Lorenzini. They pick up the faint electrical current from the heart of a living fish—even if it’s hidden in the sand! Imagine: you close your eyes and yet you know where someone is standing because you can hear their heartbeat.

Interestingly, the white shark does not swallow everything in one go. It first carefully «tastes» with its teeth — and often spits out what it does not like. Scientists say: the shark is smarter than it seems in the movies.

People are helping great white sharks. In many countries, they are protected by law, because without predators, the ocean is sick. So the next time you hear "shark", remember: this is not a monster, but a master of smell, which the Earth created 400 million years ago.
