Meteorite in the hands of a boy

Метеорит у руках хлопчика

⏱ ~5 min reading

One early autumn, Mykhailik was walking through the garden near his house. The sun was still warm, but no longer scorching, the leaves on the apple trees were starting to turn yellow, and the grass smelled of wet pears and dill. He was walking barefoot - he really liked the feel of the cool earth under his heels.

Suddenly his foot touched something smooth. Mikhail leaned over.

Between the blades of grass lay a pebble. Unusual. Small, like a bird's egg, only slightly elongated. Dark blue, almost black, with thin silver veins running along it, like rivers on a small planet.

Mykhailik picked it up carefully, with two fingers.

The pebble was warm. Not cold like the others. Warm, like a loaf of bread just taken from the oven. And when the boy brought it to his ear, he heard a soft, soft sound. The pebble was ringing. Gently, evenly, like an old clock on his grandmother's wall: "tick-tick-tick.".

The boy froze. He couldn't breathe from excitement. His heart was beating in his chest faster than that little clockwork pebble.

And then he heard. Not with his ear—somewhere inside. A thin, gentle whisper, as if from behind the wall of sleep.

"I'm from a distant star," whispered the pebble in his palms. "I've traveled a million years to end up here. I've flown through the cold darkness, past great planets and icy comets. I've fallen through a blue cloud, warmed up, cooled down, rolled across a field—and finally here I am. In your arms. I want to stay.".

Mykhailik took a deep breath. Then he said quietly:

"I won't leave you. Honestly, honestly.".

He ran to the house, holding the meteorite in his hands like a most precious secret. Grandma saw him from the threshold and smiled:

"What are you carrying, dear?"

"Grandma," Mykhailik whispered, as if it couldn't be louder. "I have a star. A real one. Warm, from far away space.".

Grandma didn't laugh. She never laughed at Mikhail's words, even when they sounded strange. She just nodded:

"Then you must take good care of her. Let me find a nice pot.".

He and his grandmother took a small clay pot, filled it with soft black earth from under an apple tree, added a little sand and one spoonful of ash from the stove - "to make the earth tasty," as his grandmother said. Mykhailik himself, very carefully, placed his meteorite in the very center. He sprinkled earth on top.

"Now water it every evening," said the grandmother. "And speak to it gently. All living things love to be spoken to.".

Every evening, Mykhailik would go to the windowsill where the pot stood and water the soil with a small blue watering can. He wouldn't water much, just drop by drop. Then he would lean closer and whisper:

— Good evening, dawn. Today I was at school. I drew a little planet for you. Then my dad and I went to the forest to pick mushrooms. And tomorrow it will rain. Sleep well. I'm here.

The meteorite tinkled softly inside the earth: «tick-tick-tick.» To Mykhailik, it seemed like a lullaby.

A week passed. A second passed. Nothing appeared on the pot.

Once my mother said cautiously:

"Maybe he's just a rock, son?"

"No," Mykhailik answered seriously. "He's just thinking. The stars are slowly waking up.".

And he continued to water.

Another week passed. And one morning, when the first rays of the sun touched the windowsill, Mykhailik opened his eyes to something warm. A soft, soft light flooded the room.

He sat up in bed - and froze.

A flower grew in a pot.

Small, thin-stemmed. At the very top was an inflorescence in the shape of a six-pointed star. The petals were silver, with a blue tint, thin as a child's shirt. In the middle was a tiny yellow dot that pulsated like a real distant sun.

The flower glowed softly.

"Grandma! Mom!" Mykhailik shouted. "She's woken up! My star has woken up!"

Everyone came running. They watched in silence. Grandma crossed herself.

"That's how it is," she said quietly. "If you treat a stone with love, it will grow.".

The flower continued to bloom. During the day, it was like an ordinary flower. And at night, it began to quietly light up, with a soft silver glow that gently fell on the walls of the room, on the blanket, on Mikhail's forehead. In such light, dreams came deep and good. Mikhail slept next to him, more peacefully than ever.

Years passed. Mykhailik grew up. School was replaced by a gymnasium, and the gymnasium by a university. He studied the stars. He looked through telescopes. He flew to distant observatories. He became an astronomer — a real one, with a white coat and notebooks full of numbers.

But his greatest treasure remained at home, on that same windowsill. A small star flower. It bloomed and bloomed. Every evening it softly shone. It did not age. Grandma joked: "Stars do not die quickly.".

When Mykhailo had a daughter, he brought her to the windowsill and showed her:

"Look, little one. This is my first star. I found it when I was a boy.".

The girl reached out her hand and carefully touched the petal. The flower lit up a little brighter, as if it were smiling.

Mykhailo ran his finger over the smooth leaf and thought quietly: "Because love grows life even from a simple pebble. And the stars really bloom - for those who know how to wait.".
