A grove where the leaves sing

Behind the old bridge, across the stream where the water tells tales to the pebbles, there is a small grove. Small, but special. The trees in it stand in a circle, as if holding hands. Maples, birches, hazel and one slender poplar in the middle - like a conductor in an orchestra. People call this grove the Singing. And not for nothing.

Old grandparents say: every leaf in that grove is a note. Yellow is a sol, green is a mi, red is a la, gold is a do. And when the wind blows and stirs the crowns, the leaves begin to sing. And the forest turns into an orchestra. It plays a symphony that no composer has written. Because you can't write one like that - nature itself writes it.

But there is one subtlety. You can hear music only when you are quiet yourself. Completely quiet. Not only with your lips, but also inside. If you came with noise in your head, with resentment or in a hurry, you will hear only the rustling of leaves. And if you bring silence with you, you will hear a real symphony.

Little Marichka didn't know anything about the grove. She was just running along the path because she was bored. Today in kindergarten, her friend Oksanka didn't want to play with her. She said, "I'm friends with Ivanka now." And that was it. And Marichka walked around all day with a heavy stone in her chest.

At home, the mother saw that the child was sad. She gave her a piece of warm cherry pie and said:

"Go, little one, get some fresh air. Over there, across the bridge, into the grove. Just sit there quietly. And sit.".

Marichka nodded. She put on her jacket, tied her boots, and left. Over the bridge, across the stream, past the alder and hazel trees, into the Singing Grove.

When she entered the trees, she was immediately enveloped by a special smell. It smelled of fallen leaves, mushrooms, and a little bit of honey. The ground under her feet was soft as a carpet. The sun broke through the crowns with golden spears, and in those spears, specks of dust danced.

Marichka sat down on the thick moss under the birch tree. She put the pie next to her. She closed her eyes.

At first she didn't hear anything. Only her heartbeat: thump-thump, thump-thump. And thoughts. Thoughts raced through her head like rabbits: "Why did Oksanka do this? Why me? What if she never sees me again...".

Marichka sighed. She put her hands on her knees. And tried to do what her grandfather taught her when they were fishing. «Listen to the silence,» he would say. “The silence also speaks, just very quietly.”.

The girl sighed deeply. Her thoughts gradually calmed down. Her heart beat became slower.

And then she heard.

First, one quiet sound. Like a small bell far, far away. "Ding." Then a second, lower one: "dum." Then a third, like a drop falling into a silver bowl: "plyn.".

The wind barely moved the branches. And the leaves sang.

Marichka sat with her eyes closed and listened. It was no ordinary rustling. It was a melody. A lullaby. Soft, quiet, warm. No one had ever sung to her like that—not even her mother. Because her mother's lullaby was her mother's. And this one was forest, ancient, big, like the sky itself.

The leaves sang one after another, passing the note around in a circle. The birch began, the hazel picked up, the poplar in the middle held a long, low sound like a cello. Somewhere above, the aspen's voice was added - thin, trembling. And nearby, a young maple tapped softly - like a small drum.

Marichka didn't notice how time passed. She didn't notice how her cheeks spread with a smile. She didn't notice how the stone in her chest became lighter, then completely light, then disappeared.

When she finally opened her eyes, the sun was already waning toward evening. A light mist lay over the grass. Somewhere in the distance, shepherds were calling home.

Marichka stood up. She quietly bowed to the trees, as her grandmother had taught her, for a good deed.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

The leaves rustled with a quiet "please-please-please.".

On the way home, Marichka was no longer sad. A little inner lullaby played in her chest. She thought about Oksanka — and thought calmly. "I'll go to her tomorrow. Maybe the three of us will play with Ivanka. Or maybe I'll find a new girlfriend. Everything will work out somehow.".

At home, her mother met her on the doorstep and immediately saw: the child had blossomed. Her eyes were clear, her shoulders were level, and there was peace on her lips.

"Well?" Mom smiled. "Did the grove help?"

"He helped," Marichka nodded. "But you know, Mom... He only helps when you calm down. And if you make a noise inside, you won't hear anything.".

Mom sat down, hugged her and said:

"Then you have found the most precious treasure of the forest, little one. Because the best music in the world is heard by those who know how to be quiet.".

Since then, Marichka often ran to the Singing Grove. On happy days, she listened to the dance. On sad days, she listened to the lullaby. On days when something was confused inside, she came, sat on the moss, and simply listened. And the forest taught her one simple thing: to hear beauty, you must first shut up yourself.

One day she brought Oksanka there too. They made up, as little children make up, without any words, just holding hands. They sat down together under a birch tree, placed their palms on top of each other, and fell silent. At first Oksanka shook her head, whispered, and couldn't sit still. And then she heard. Her eyes became round.

"Marichka..." she whispered. "It really sings.".

"Shh," Marichka smiled. "Listen.".

And they listened together. And above them the wind gently swayed the melody, and the birches rang with green bells, and somewhere above the aspen sang a high, high note, like a silver bell.

When they were returning home, Oksanka took Marichka's hand very firmly and said:

— You know, I thought the most beautiful music was when it was loud. But it turns out it was quiet.

Marichka nodded. She already knew.

And this, it turns out, is the best science of all.
