How to be grateful

Grandma Nadiya would get up before the sun. While everyone was sleeping, she would already be kneading the dough — careful not to creak the floors. Pies with potatoes and fried onions were Bogdan's favorite. She knew this, so she baked them every time he came over.

Bohdan ran into the kitchen, grabbed a pie, took a bite, and left. He never said "thank you." He never stopped.

One day he came in and saw: “Those pies again?” he said, a little disappointed. “I thought there would be something different.”.

Grandma didn't answer. She just put down the towel and went into the room.

The next morning there was nothing on the table. Grandma was sitting in a chair, dozing off with her tired hands on her lap. Bohdan looked at her hands: small, with tired fingers, with flour in the wrinkles.

Something pricked inside. Not painful, but tangible.

Two small figures appeared on the windowsill: an owl with glasses and a squirrel with an acorn. They looked silently — first at Grandma's hands, then at Bogdan.

🦉 Lesson from Sofiyka

Добро не з'являється саме по собі

1. Goodness does not appear by itself.

Pies don't come from the store by themselves. Behind every kind act is a person who has spent time and energy. Grandma gets up before the sun, even though she could be sleeping. She does it because she loves you. Noticing this work is the first step to gratitude.

2. «Thank you» is not just a word

Some people think that «thank you» is a formality, like saying «good morning» to a stranger. But it’s actually a small bridge between two hearts. When you say «thank you» sincerely, you’re saying, «I see you. I see what you’ve done for me. And that’s important to me.».

"And that's nice! It always makes me feel better when someone thanks me. Even for an acorn!"

«Дякую» — це не просто слово
Вдячність — це увага

3. Gratitude is attention

Before you say «thank you,» you need to notice. Who cooked the meal? Who put clean socks on the bed? Who wiped your boots after a walk? Train your eyes to see what others do for you. It’s like a special game — «find the good around you.».

4. Nagging hurts more than it seems

«Those pies again?» — these words the grandmother heard. She said nothing. But when a person tries hard, and in response hears a complaint — it hurts. You don’t have to praise everything in a row. But you can be silent instead of complaining, and you can always say «thank you» for the good that is there.

Вередування ранить більше, ніж здається
Вдячність робить тебе щасливішим

5. Gratitude makes you happier

It's strange, but true: when we notice the good around us, we ourselves feel better. Try to remember three things in the evening that you are grateful for today. Even small ones: a delicious dinner, the sun in the window, the fact that a friend shared a toy. You will see - the world will look a little brighter.

— I do this myself every day! Today, for example, I'm grateful for this acorn, for Sofiychyna's glasses, and for the fact that Bohdan wasn't afraid of us!

6. There are many ways to say thank you.

With words - «thank you, grandma, it’s very tasty.» With a hug - just come up and hug. With help - ask: «Would you like to help wash the dishes?» With a drawing - draw a heart and put it on the table. Gratitude lives not only in words, but also in actions.

Ніколи не пізно почати

7. It's never too late to start

— And if I didn't thank you before? — Bohdan asked quietly. — Then start now, — Sofiyka answered simply. — The best moment is always now.

Grandma woke up. She saw Bohdan standing next to her and looking at her.

"Grandma," he said quietly, "thank you. For all the pies. For all the fairy tales. For everything.".

Her eyes sparkled. She said nothing—she just reached out and patted his head.

"Teach me how to make pies," Bogdan asked.

They made a whole baking sheet of them—crooked, uneven, but warm. Grandma said they were the tastiest.
