How to quit a bad habit

Sasha was standing in front of the mirror in the bathroom. He had to brush his teeth. He took the brush. He squeezed out the toothpaste. And suddenly he noticed that his right hand, instead of reaching for the toothbrush, was reaching for something completely different.

To the mouth. With a finger. With a nail.

He had already taken a small bite. Again.

Sasha froze. He looked at his fingernail in the mirror. It was short, uneven, slightly reddish at the edges. Sasha hid his hand behind his back — as if it wasn't his hand, but someone else's.

«"Well, I promised myself yesterday. And the day before yesterday. And last week. And still.".

Something inside him collapsed. Quietly, like sand from a beach bucket when you turn it over.

«"I can't. I just can't. It's stronger than me.".

He sat down on a small wooden stool by the bathtub. He propped his head up with both hands. And immediately realized that he was biting his nail again. He pulled his hand away. He sat down on it. Then on the other.

It became somehow completely uncomfortable. And completely sad.

Mom knocked on the door:

— Sasha, are you there?

"I'm a little late! I haven't even finished brushing my teeth yet!" he shouted.

Mom's footsteps fell silent. Sasha looked in the mirror again. The boy in the mirror had sad eyes.

«"What if I never get rid of it at all? What if I bite my nails when I'm ten? Twenty? Forty?".

The thought was so terrifying that he didn't even notice as he put his finger to his mouth for the third time.

At that moment, something fluffy swayed on the wide round side of the bathtub. Sasha turned his head. On the side sat a little red squirrel. In a pink scarf. With an acorn in its paws.

Sasha was so surprised that he even forgot about the nail.

“You… who are you?” he whispered.

"Straight straw," the squirrel answered calmly. "And you, as I see, are at war with yourself.".

"I don't fight," Sasha muttered. "I just... I can't. I'm not good at it. I'm weak.".

Upstairs, on a wooden shelf where folded towels lay, something rustled softly. Sasha looked up. Between two piles of towels sat a large, warm owl—with light brown feathers, a cream chest, and small round glasses on its beak.

"Sasha," the owl said gently, "my name is Sofiyka. Can I explain something to you?"

Sasha nodded silently. He no longer had the strength to even be surprised.

"Habit is not you," said Sofiyka. "Habit is the path that your hands have trodden in the grass. You have walked and trodden many times. Not because you are bad. But because it is easier for your feet to walk a familiar path than a new one.".

"And how do you "close" it?" Sasha raised his eyebrows.

— The paths are not closed, — Solomiyka smiled. — The paths grow overgrown. If you don't walk on them — the grass will grow on its own. You just have to carefully turn your feet to another path. Once. A second time. A third time. And then — of course.

Sasha wiped his eyes with the sleeve of his pajamas. He suddenly realized that he had been crying—just a little, but he had been crying.

"What if I forget again?"

"Then you'll forget," Sofiyka said calmly. "And you'll remember again. And you'll forget again. That's normal. Do you want me to show you how to get back on the new path more easily?"

🦉 Lesson from Sofiyka

Спочатку — просто помічай

1. First, just notice.

Before you break a habit, you need to look at it. Don't beat yourself up, don't promise "never again," but simply notice: "Oh, me again." It's like catching a fish with your eyes — not hard, not sharply, but attentively. The more often you notice, the less the habit holds you back.

2. Find your «switch»

Every habit has a switch — the moment when it appears. Maybe you bite your nails when you're nervous? Or when you're bored? Or when you're watching cartoons? Listen to yourself for a few days and remember your switch. If you know the enemy in person — half the battle is done.

3. Give your hands a new job

Quitting a habit is not «doing nothing.» It’s doing something different. Put a small pebble-softener, a piece of plasticine, a small anti-stress toy in your pocket. When your hands reach for the old one, quickly switch to the new one. Hands are grateful when they have work to do.

4. Celebrate small victories

Draw seven squares in your notebook - for a week. Every day you do something, put a star in the square. It's okay if there is only one star out of three. Because yesterday there was zero. Small victories are real victories, not imaginary ones.

Якщо впав — встань і не картай себе

5. If you fall, get up and don't beat yourself up.

You will definitely forget and do it the old way again. This is normal. It is not «all is lost». It is just one day. Tell yourself: «Okay, it happened. Tomorrow - I will try again». The worst thing is not falling. The worst thing is lying there and thinking that you are bad. You got up - therefore, you win.

6. Don't be shy to ask for support

Tell your mom, dad, grandma, or older brother that you're quitting the habit. Ask them not to scold you, but to gently remind you: "Sasha, hold on." It's easier together. It's like learning to ride a bike: first someone holds it, and then you ride it yourself.

Не соромся попросити підтримки

Sasha listened and nodded. Somewhere inside — where the sand had just collapsed — something new was slowly pouring in. Calm. Solid. Like a small pebble.

"Solomyko," said Sasha, "do you have a pebble like that? A small one? For your pocket?"

The squirrel laughed—quietly, like rustling leaves. She jumped off the side of the bathtub and disappeared somewhere. A second later she returned with a tiny, smooth gray pebble—the kind you find in a river.

"Here. Take it. It's your helper. When your hand wants to crawl to your mouth, put it in your pocket and hold the pebble. It's cold. It's soothing.".

Sasha took the pebble. It was indeed cool and very pleasant to the touch.

"And also," added Sofiyka from the shelf, "ask your mother. Don't argue. Just say quietly, 'Sasha, hand.' Without anger. As a reminder. It's easier together.".

"Okay," Sasha said firmly.

He went to the sink. He took a brush. He squeezed out the toothpaste. And he started brushing his teeth - with both hands. One - the brush, the other - clutching a pebble in his pajama pocket.

In the mirror, the boy no longer had sad eyes. He had eyes that had decided something.

And Sofiyka and Solomiyka quietly looked at each other and smiled.
