A letter from across the sea

Лист зі-за моря

Irynka lived in a small village hidden between the mountains. In the fall it was beautiful there - golden leaves, mushrooms. And in the winter - cold and lonely. The roads were covered with snow, the bus did not come, the mail was delayed for weeks.

Irynka was waiting for a special package. Her aunt Lyubka lived far, far away, across the sea, in another country. Once a year she sent gifts - something small, but always with love. This year her aunt promised to send something special: "My dear, this time I'm sending you a treasure. Wait.".

Every day, Irynka ran to the old mailbox at the gate. She opened it, looked in — and there was only snow and cobwebs. She closed it again. She sighed.

A blizzard had been raging for a week. The kind that bent the trees all the way to the ground, the windows were covered in frost with crosses. Neither the post office, nor the bus, nor even Dad could go into town.

Christmas Eve came. Mom set the dinner. Irynka sat quietly. She looked at the table through tears. "I guess Auntie's package was swept away. It will never be delivered. Or it will be delivered in the spring - and by then..."«

Mom hugged her: "Don't cry, daughter. Sometimes what loves us doesn't come on time. But it does.".

Лист зі-за моря

At night, Irynka woke up from silence. A sudden, amazing silence. She sat up in bed, listened - the wind wasn't whistling, it wasn't beating branches against the window. The blizzard had subsided.

And suddenly — a soft knock on the door. Three knocks. Clear. Gentle.

Irynka jumped out of bed. She ran to the door. She opened it. On the threshold stood a tall old man in white and gold. His mitre shone, he held a staff. His white beard reached down to his waist. In his hands was a small package with a red bow.

"Your package has arrived, Irynka. How could I have let it not arrive on Christmas Eve?"

Irynka took the package. It was warm, as if it had just been taken out of the oven.

"Thank you, Uncle Nikolai," she whispered.

The saint smiled. "Look inside only in the morning. And now - run to sleep. Tomorrow is Christmas." And he disappeared into the snowy night. The trace of the crutch remained in the snow - it shone as if from golden sparks.

In the morning, Irynka opened the package. Inside was an old black-and-white photograph: a young teenage girl, with braids and freckles, sitting by a small river. On the back, her aunt's hand: "This is me at your age. I was just as dreamy as you. Don't change. Sweetheart." And a gold medallion with a tiny lock of hair. And a note: "You have family. Everywhere. Even across the sea.".

Irynka sat on the floor for a long time. She looked at the photo. And for the first time she felt: she was not alone. Somewhere out there, far away, someone remembers her and is thinking about her right now. And this is a real treasure.
