Olyunka loved her grandmother more than anyone in the world. Grandma baked little buns for her on holidays, braided her braids with viburnum ribbons, and taught her to embroider a flower on a towel.
And last spring, grandma passed away. Quietly, in a dream, like a summer night falling asleep. Everyone said she was in heaven now. Olya nodded. But her heart was like an old bladder from which all the air had been let out.
The first Christmas Eve without Grandma arrived. There was a festive meal in the house, carols were playing on the radio, Mom was putting twelve dishes on the table — and Olyunk kept looking at Grandma's chair. Empty. With Grandma's towel on the back.
"Daughter, sit down," said mother gently. "Christmas Eve.".
Olyunka sat down. She ate a spoonful of kutia. She put the spoon down. She stood up quietly, took one long wax candle—one of those that Grandma always lit «for those who are no longer here»—and placed it opposite Grandma’s place.
"This is for you, grandma," she whispered. "I haven't forgotten.".

At night, Olyunka woke up. The house was very quiet. The candle was still burning, a small golden light on the quiet table. The girl quietly got up and went to look.
She sat down on her grandmother's chair. She closed her eyes. And suddenly, in the silence, in a thin voice, as if from under the very roof, she heard: "Olyunka, my little dove.".
It wasn't a dream. The voice was her grandmother's—gentle, warm, like the hands on her cheeks. Olyunka sat without moving. She held the air in her chest.
«"I'm here, baby. I'm always here, where you are. In the smell of curls. In the ribbons in your braids. In every snowflake that falls on your cheek.".
The tears flowed quietly. Not from sadness, but from something else - as if her heart was filled with air again. Olyunka whispered: "I love you, grandmother.".
In the morning, Mom found Olyunka sleeping, her head on the table. Next to the candle was a small coral bead—just like the one in Grandma's old necklace that had been lost long ago. Red like a berry. Warm.
Olyunka took it in her palm. She smiled. She put the bead on the ribbon - and from then on she wore it like a little warmth. And she lit the candle every Christmas Eve. Because she knew: Grandma was listening.
💛 Those we love don't disappear - they remain in our hearts forever.
