Why is the narwhal called the unicorn of the sea?

Did you know that unicorns exist? Only not in the meadow, like in fairy tales, but in the Arctic seas, among the ice floes! This is a narwhal - a small polar whale, from whose head sticks out a long straight horn. In ancient times, sailors found these horns on the shores and sold them as "unicorn horns." Queens paid thousands of gold for one such horn!

But the most amazing thing is not a horn. It's... a tooth! Yes, yes, a giant tooth that grows through the narwhal's upper lip and grows up to 3 meters long. A person has a tooth in their mouth, but a narwhal has one on the outside! Interestingly, this tusk is found almost only in males. And it is twisted in a spiral to the left - in all of them, without exception. That's how nature decided.

For a long time, scientists argued about why the narwhal had such a tooth. To fight? To break ice? Only recently did they learn something amazing: the tusk is a sensory organ! It has 10 million tiny nerves, and it senses the temperature of the water, its salinity, and pressure. Imagine — like a superantenna! The narwhal can understand where there is a fish, and where there is a dangerous ice trap.

Narwhals live in very cold waters off Greenland and Canada. They dive 1,500 meters deep—deeper than 5 Eiffel Towers stacked on top of each other! And they can hold their breath for 25 minutes. There are up to 20 of them in a group—and they all sing strange sounds, as if they are communicating in the language of the ocean.

The next time someone says unicorns don't exist, tell them about the narwhal. The magic is real. It just hides on the icy bottom of the sea.
