Чому фламінго рожеві — і що буде, якщо забрати їхню їжу?

Why are flamingos pink—and what happens if you take away their food?

Imagine the secret: flamingos are not born pink at all! Yes, the little chick emerges from the egg gray, like a cloud. So where does that amazing pink color come from, from which you can't take your eyes off?

From food! Flamingos eat tiny brine shrimp and blue-green algae, which contain a special substance called carotene. This is the same pigment that makes carrots orange. When flamingos digest their food, the carotene goes into their feathers and turns them a delicate pink color.

Do you know what will happen if you take a flamingo to a zoo and feed it regular food? It will turn white! The color will simply disappear. That's why zoos specifically add carotene to their food to keep it pink.

Flamingos eat in a very interesting way — upside down! Yes, they dip their beaks into the water upside down, and their beaks work like a sieve: they let the water through, but leave the crustaceans inside. In a day, one flamingo filters 250 liters of water — that's a full bathtub!

And why do flamingos stand on one leg? Scientists argued for a long time and finally figured it out: this way the bird loses less heat. The second leg is hidden in the feathers and warms up. Clever, right?

Flamingos live in huge flocks—up to a million birds together! Imagine a pink cloud over an entire lake. They do everything together: fly, eat, even dance in unison during the mating season.

Flamingos are a reminder that we truly are what we eat.
