Salmon finds its home river thousands of kilometers away

Imagine being born in one village, traveling to another continent, living there for a few years, and then, without a map or a phone, swimming thousands of kilometers and finding the very stream where you were once a kid. Unbelievable? And salmon do that every life.

Atlantic salmon are born in a small freshwater river somewhere in the mountains of Europe or Canada. There they spend the first years of their life - a tiny fish among the rocks. Then their body changes, and the salmon goes to the ocean. There they live for several years, gain strength, and grow into a beautiful silvery fish up to a meter long.

And when it comes time to have its own children, a miracle happens. The salmon returns home. Not to the sea at all — but to the same river, to the same pond where it was born. The journey can be up to 4,000 kilometers! It swims against the current, jumps over waterfalls 3 meters high, and bypasses rapids. On the way, it does not eat — it just swims home.

How does it find its native river? Scientists say that salmon have two amazing "navigation systems". In the ocean, it orients itself by the Earth's magnetic field - like a living compass. And near the shore, it turns on its sense of smell. Every river in the world has its own smell: plants, stones, soil. Salmon remembers the smell of its native water from early childhood and recognizes it among millions of others.

The natural memory of home is stronger than all the storms of the ocean. Isn't that true of humans too?
