The Knight, the Princess, and the Lonely Dragon

The Knight, the Princess, and the Lonely Dragon

Once upon a time, beyond the rose gardens of a small kingdom, there lived a brave young knight named Sir Elian and a kind princess named Rosa. They were the best of friends, and every afternoon they played together by the castle pond.

One quiet morning, a deep rumble rolled down from the hills. A dragon had come to the kingdom! Smoke curled above the trees, and the villagers hurried indoors.

“I will go and face the dragon,” said Sir Elian, lifting his little silver shield.

“May I come with you?” asked Princess Rosa. “But please — let us look before we fight.”

Together they climbed the green hill. There, beside a cold cave, sat the dragon. He was not roaring. He was crying. Each time he sniffled, a little puff of smoke slipped from his nose.

Sir Elian raised his shield. But Princess Rosa gently touched his arm. “Wait,” she whispered. “He does not look fierce. He looks sad.”

She stepped forward and picked a single flower. “Hello,” she said softly. “Why are you crying?”

The dragon blinked his big, shining eyes. “Everyone runs away from me,” he sniffed. “I only wanted someone to play with. But when I come close, people scream, and the smoke makes it worse.”

Sir Elian lowered his shield. He understood now. The dragon was not a monster to be fought — he was simply lonely. “You can play with us,” said the knight kindly. “But first, let us help you with that smoke.”

Princess Rosa had an idea. She led the dragon down to the castle pond. “When you feel your nose grow warm,” she said, “take a slow, deep breath of cool air, like this.” She breathed in gently, and out again.

The dragon tried. He breathed in the cool air over the water — and this time no smoke came, only a soft, silver sparkle. He laughed with delight, and his laugh sounded like tiny bells.

From that day on, the three were never apart. The dragon gave the children rides above the clouds. The knight taught him brave games, and the princess taught him gentle ones. And the villagers, who had once hidden away, came out to wave — for the fearsome dragon had become the friendliest creature in all the land.

Sir Elian often said it was the bravest thing he had ever done. Not because he had fought a dragon — but because he had stopped to listen instead. For the greatest knights and the kindest princesses know a secret: sometimes courage is not raising your sword, but offering your hand.

The end. Good night, little one — sleep well, and dream of gentle dragons and brave, kind hearts.
