How to solve riddles for children

A riddle is a small task for the imagination: the child collects signs (whiskered, purrs, catches mice) and looks for who they belong to. Riddles about animals and things at home are suitable for 3-4 year olds: the answer can be pointed to a cat or a chair with a finger. Riddles about nature, transport and school are more interesting for children 5-7 years old, where they have to think. If the child does not guess, do not say the answer right away: give a hint («it lives in a pond»), and the joy of solving will be their own.

Most of the riddles on this page were created by us, so they are not in other collections; folk ones are marked separately. The riddles go well with our animal tales and coloring pages: guess the cat - color the cat.

Frequently asked questions

At what age do children solve riddles?
From the age of 3 - simple ones, about familiar animals and things, with clues. From the age of 5 - already independently, and from 6-7 children are happy to come up with their own riddles.
How to play puzzles with a group of children?
Read the riddle and ask them to raise their hand instead of shouting. Or divide the children into two teams and count the points: this also trains the ability to wait your turn.
Can you come up with a riddle yourself?
Yes, this is the best game. Choose an object, name three of its features without naming it, and let others guess. Children 6-7 years old do this without help.
