Maksymko sat on the rug and looked at the screen. The ship on the screen sails slowly, then faster, then \u2014 boom! \u2014 and you have to start over. The most interesting moment!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it's quiet outside. Too quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"Fish," he suddenly whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He raised his head and looked at the clock. The hand showed half past five. And he had promised his neighbor Darynka to feed the fish at five \u2014 she and her dad had gone to visit her grandmother for two days and asked Maksym to take care of the aquarium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"She looked at me like that," he muttered. "She said, 'Maximka, I'm counting on you.'".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ship on the screen sailed on. But it wasn't as interesting anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maksymko turned around. On the back of the sofa sat a small owl in round glasses, looking at him attentively and without judgment. And next to him was a red squirrel in a pink scarf, holding an acorn tightly and impatiently tugging its fluffy tail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"I'm Sophie," the owl said quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"And I'm Solomiyka!" the squirrel picked up. "And your boat will wait, but the fish won't!"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maksymko put down the tablet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"I just forgot," he said. "I got so caught up in the game that I didn't notice the arrow go by.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"It happens," said Owl Sophie. "It's not what you forgot that matters, it's what you feel right now.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"It's not like he's doing anything," Maksymko admitted. "It's like he hasn't finished anything.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"That's what conscience is," Sofiyka nodded. "It doesn't scold. It just reminds you: 'You gave your word.' Let's think together about how to do it right.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maksymko got up from the rug. He picked up the key to Darin's apartment, which was hanging on a hook by the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"Wait, I'll be quick," he told them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"We're in no hurry," Solomiyka replied, and wag her tail again. "Well, almost nowhere.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. A promise is a small agreement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When you say \u00abI will do it\u00bb or \u00abI will come\u00bb \u2014 a person begins to count on you. He plans his own, knowing that you are nearby. A promise is like a bridge between two people. As long as the word stands, the bridge holds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

2. Don't make hasty promises or overpromise.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes you want to say \u00abyes\u00bb right away to make the person happy. But it\u2019s better to stop for a second and think: can I really do it? Will there be time? A short pause before making a promise is not slowness, it\u2019s responsibility.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

3. So as not to forget, leave yourself a sign<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Memory is a wonderful thing, but sometimes it plays hide-and-seek. Write it on a piece of paper and stick it on the fridge. Ask your mom to remind you. Put a toy by the door as a signal. Even a small, visible sign keeps the promise alive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

4. If it's hard to do, take at least a small step.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

6. Keeping your word builds trust.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Every time you keep a promise, people notice. Not right away, and not loudly. But gradually they start to know: "You can rely on Maksym." And this is a very valuable thing. Much more valuable than any game or any record.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

7. A promise to yourself is also important<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When he got home, the tablet was still there. The ship was waiting on the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Maksymko first hung the key on a hook and wrote in his notebook: "Tomorrow \u2014 fish \u2014 at 5:00 p.m.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And only then did he sit down to play. Now \u2014 with a calm heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
