How to tell the truth<\/h1>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The ball flew higher than it should have. Ostap felt it even before the sound\u2014such a sharp premonition that something was going to go wrong. And then\u2014a ding. Mother's vase on the windowsill swayed and fell. Shards flew across the floor, and the room became very quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murchik\u2014a ginger cat with a white spot on his nose\u2014raised his head from the sofa and looked at Ostap with an air of, as if to say, "You saw. I saw. But I'll keep quiet.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ostap squatted down. His heart was pounding. Thoughts raced quickly: "I'll say it's Murchik. He was jumping here this morning. Mom doesn't know. Maybe she won't ask." He even put the ball behind the sofa. He covered the shards with old newspaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murchik raised his tail and left the room, dignified, like a true witness who was tired of being implicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All day Ostap played, ate, and watched cartoons. But something was spinning inside him\u2014somewhere in his stomach, as if a small cog had started up there that wouldn't let him rest. At dinner he couldn't finish his soup. Before going to bed, he lay for a long time staring at the ceiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then I heard voices from the shelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the bookshelf sat a little owl in round glasses, Sofiyka. Next to her, a squirrel with an acorn in its paws, Solomiya, was squealing and fidgeting restlessly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre you awake?\u201d asked Sofiyka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"I'm not sleeping," Ostap admitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIs that screw in your stomach not working?\u201d Solomiyka clarified and poked the acorn in the direction of Ostap\u2019s stomach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ostap was silent. But silence is also an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we say something untrue, it seems like the problem has disappeared. But in reality, it remains\u2014and begins to grow. The longer we remain silent or lie, the harder it is to admit it later. A small pebble turns into a heavy backpack that you carry with you everywhere.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

2. Conscience is not a punishment, it is a friend<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

That twisting in the stomach that Ostap felt is not scary or bad. It is an inner voice that says: \u00abHey, something went wrong here.\u00bb It does not scold, it simply reminds. It is good that this voice is there - it means that you care about the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"That spinning is me!" Solomiyka shouted cheerfully and stamped her foot. "Well, not me personally, but you understand!"<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

3. Confessing is brave.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Many people think that courage is not being afraid. But true courage is doing the right thing, even when it's scary. Saying "I broke it" is much harder than staying silent. And therefore much braver.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

4. Adults understand more than they seem<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes children think: "If I confess, it will be terrible." But moms and dads remember well how they were little and also broke, lost or spoiled something. They are more upset by the lie than by the mistake itself. Because the thing can be replaced, but trust is more difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"My mom once broke my dad's favorite toy," Solomiyka whispered. "She confessed, and nothing bad happened. They even hugged!"<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The words "I broke it," "I'm sorry," "I won't play ball in the room anymore" are not weakness. They're like medicine. At first, it's a little bitter \u2014 it's hard to pronounce. But after \u2014 it immediately becomes easier. The twisting in the stomach goes away. And breathing becomes easier.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

6. Mistakes are not the end of the world<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Everyone makes mistakes. Absolutely everyone \u2014 children, adults, even very wise owls \u2014 Sofia coughed slightly \u2014 who sometimes sit on the wrong branch. A mistake is not \u00abI\u2019m bad.\u00bb It\u2019s just \u00abI\u2019m human, and I\u2019m learning.\u00bb It\u2019s not what you fell that matters, but what you do next.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

When you tell the truth, even the hard truth, people start to trust you more. And trust is like a bridge between two hearts. The more often you speak honestly, the stronger this bridge becomes. And you can walk on it, even when there is a storm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ostap got up. Quietly, so as not to wake anyone except his own decision. He went into the kitchen - his mother was unpacking packages from the store, putting jars on the shelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"Mom," he said. His voice was a little quieter than he wanted. "I broke your vase today. With a ball. I wanted to say it was Murchik, but it was me.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom put the jar down. She turned around. She looked at him for a long time \u2014 not angrily, but somehow differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"Thank you for telling the truth," she finally said, hugging him. "The ball in the room isn't the best idea, is it?"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"True," Ostap agreed. And the churning in his stomach finally disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next morning he found the shards behind the newspaper and took them to his mother\u2014to let her know that he had taken responsibility to the end. The shelf was empty, but something in the room seemed to smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
