Why does a toucan have such a big beak?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Imagine having a nose as long as your arm on your face. It\u2019s uncomfortable, isn\u2019t it? But for a toucan, it\u2019s fine! This bright bird from the rainforests of South America has a beak up to 20 centimeters long\u2014almost a third of its entire body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When scientists first saw a toucan, they were sure that such a huge beak must be very heavy. But when they weighed it, they were surprised! The beak weighs only 30-40 grams. It's like two pieces of cookies! Why is it so light? Inside, it is hollow, with thin bone partitions - like a sponge. Nature built it on the principle of an aircraft wing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And why does a toucan have such a nose? It turned out that it is a real air conditioner! When it is hot in the rainforest, the toucan's blood flows to its beak, and the heat goes outside. When it is cool, the blood moves away from its beak, and the bird retains heat. It is like a radiator in a car!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The toucan also uses its beak to pluck ripe mangoes and papayas that grow on thin branches. A normal bird wouldn't be able to reach them, but a toucan can! It simply stretches out its long beak and carefully plucks the fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People have long been inspired by the toucan. Engineers who design airplanes and trains have studied its beak to create lighter and stronger structures. This is how a small bird teaches big adults!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
