The dart frog's throat doesn't just make sounds—it also hears. Yes, its ears are partly located in its throat and lungs.

For a long time, scientists didn't understand how tiny, colorful frogs in the rainforest could hear each other over the roar of waterfalls and rain. They don't have external ears, like all amphibians. Only flat spots behind their eyes are eardrums. But that's not enough.

In 2014, researchers in Belgium solved the mystery. They found that when another frog croaks, sound waves enter the frog's lungs through its skin. Its lungs swell with the sound, like real drums. And then this vibration is transmitted through the mouth to the inner ear. It turns out that the frog listens with its whole body!

The blue dart frog from South America is tiny, only 4 centimeters long. Smaller than the palm of your hand. But the poison on its skin could kill 10 adult humans. Native Americans rubbed this poison on the tips of their arrows - hence the name.

Interestingly, in captivity, these frogs become non-poisonous. Because the poison comes from the insects they eat in the jungle. There are no special bugs - there is no poison. The frog became like this because of its diet.

And imagine what it's like to listen with your chest. To feel your mother's voice not with your ears, but with your heart. Maybe we do that too when we love someone very, very much.

More interesting facts about animals at on the category page ✨

The dart frog's ears aren't where you think they are.
