Imagine: you're on the beach and suddenly your mom calls your name. You recognize the voice and turn around. Now imagine that dolphins are doing the same thing underwater. Yes, they have names too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each bottlenose dolphin invents a unique whistle when it is still a baby, somewhere around a few months old. This whistle, which scientists have called a \u00absignature whistle,\u00bb becomes its name for life. A dolphin can live for 40-50 years \u2014 and all these decades it whistles the same way. It is recognized by its name, just as you recognize your friend by his voice on the telephone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2013, scientists in Florida conducted an amazing experiment. They recorded the whistle-name of one dolphin and played it underwater through a speaker. What happened? The very dolphin whose name it was swam up and answered! And the others swam past without even looking back. Even more interesting: when the dolphins had not seen each other for a long time (sometimes they were separated for 20 years!), they happily whistled each other's names when they met - like we hug an old friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dolphins can call their friends, their mothers, and their children by name. A mother dolphin repeats her baby's name thousands of times until the baby remembers it. They can also distinguish up to 1,000 different whistles, clicks, and squeaks. Their language has "words" and even something like "sentences.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scientists believe that besides humans and dolphins, only parrots and some monkeys call each other individually. So the next time you hear about dolphins, remember: somewhere in the ocean, someone is calling their friend by name right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
