How a bee tells its sisters where the flowers are - by dancing<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Imagine: you found a clearing with strawberries in the forest. How do you tell your friends where exactly that clearing is? Do you draw a map? And the bee does it with a dance!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a worker bee finds flowers with nectar, it returns to the hive and begins to spin around among its sisters in a figure eight shape - eights, like the number 8. Scientists have called this dance "waving." And here's the miracle: the direction in which the bee moves in the middle of the figure eight shows the direction to the flowers relative to the sun. And the longer it shakes its abdomen, the further away the flowers are. One second of shaking is about 750 meters of flight!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hive is dark, so the sisters can't see the dance with their eyes. They feel it with their antennae\u2014the way you feel the vibrations of music through the floor. And the best part: the other bees understand this language the first time. No one teaches them\u2014they are born with this knowledge, just as you were born with the ability to smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One bee flies about 800 kilometers in its lifetime \u2014 from Kyiv to Lviv and back. And for all these kilometers, it collects only half a teaspoon of honey. That is, every spoonful of honey on your bread is the work of 12 bees dancing floral treasure maps to each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next time you see a bee, don't be scared. It's a little dancer flying to tell her sisters where she found the tastiest nectar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
