So far that even on the map hanging above his bed, you had to drag your finger for a long, long time until you reached the thin blue strip at the very edge.

He was seven years old. He had freckles on his nose, two front teeth with a small gap in the middle, and he really, really wanted to see the sea someday. Not in pictures. For real.

One autumn evening, my grandmother came to visit. She brought with her an apple pie, a warm woolen blanket, and a small canvas bag tied with a blue ribbon.

"And this," she said, sinking into a chair next to Yura, "is a special gift. Listen carefully, my little one.".

Yura untied the ribbon. Inside lay a shell. Large, smooth, pink on the outside, like an evening cloud, and inside - shiny, pearly, with a delicate silver shimmer. It lay warm and heavy in his palm.

“Grandma,” Yura whispered, “is she… alive?”

"Almost," the grandmother smiled. "Listen. It has the sounds of the sea.".

Yura carefully put the shell to his ear. And at first he heard only silence. And then — as if from afar — a soft rustle. The sound of the wind. Waves running onto the sand and rolling back. The small sob of sea drops.

"Grandma," he raised his eyes, wide with wonder. "How is that? There's no sea here. How did it get here?"

Grandma stroked his head with her warm hand, which smelled of apple and a little bit of lavender.

"These are memories, son. I've been going to the sea since I was young. There I sunbathed, caught little crabs, watched the sun set into the water. And you know what? All those days remained in the shell. She remembered them. Now she's giving them to you.".

Yura held the shell carefully, like a baby bird. He was afraid to break it.

"Will she tell me everything?"

"That's all," the grandmother nodded. "Listen every day. Even if it's just for one minute.".

That's what Yura did. Every night, before going to bed, he would take a seashell from under his pillow and put it to his ear. The waves rustled, the wind whistled softly, invisible seagulls screamed. Yura imagined a beach: yellow sand, still warm from the sun. The smell of salt was sharp, clean, new. Small pebbles rolling in the water with a quiet "click-click.".

When his mother asked, «Son, where are you going?» Yura would answer:

— I'm at sea. Not for long.

She smiled and didn't interfere.

Years passed. Yura grew up. Grandma came less often - her knees hurt, and the long journey was tiring. And then one winter morning, Mom sat down on the edge of Yura's bed, patted his shoulder and said quietly:

"Grandma left, son. At night. Quietly, in her sleep.".

Yura was silent for a long time. Then he took a shell from the shelf, where it lay on a small woven napkin, and put it to his ear. The waves were making the same noise. The wind was just as gentle. And it seemed to Yura that there, among the waves, he could hear his grandmother's voice - warm, with a hint of laughter, as always.

«"I'm still here, my little one. I'm in the shell. Listen.".

A lot of time passed. Yura grew up. He turned seventeen, and his parents finally took him to the real sea.

When he first stepped barefoot on the sand, his heart beat fast. The water glistened, the seagulls screamed high in the sky, the waves came and went, leaving thin laces of white foam on the sand.

Yura stood and watched. And suddenly he smiled.

Because it was all familiar. Every sound. Every smell. The sharp taste of salt on your lips when the wind blew. The rustle of sand under your feet. The distant roar of a wave crashing against the rock.

It was like he had been here before. Many, many times.

Yura took a small canvas bag with a blue ribbon out of his pocket. He untied it. He took out a shell. He raised it above the water, as if to show it.

“Look, Grandma,” he said quietly, “we’re here.”.

The wave gently licked his legs. The wind hugged his shoulders. And it seemed to Yuri that the shell in his palm became even warmer than usual.

He crouched down and filled a shell with salt water. He listened. Now the sound was a real ocean—the same as before, only something added. Maybe it was his own voice. Maybe it was his grandmother’s laughter. Maybe it was that quiet moment when two people, separated by time, finally stood together on the same beach.

From that day on, Yura carried a seashell everywhere. In his backpack, in his jacket pocket, in his suitcase. And when he was sad, he would take it out and listen. And he always heard: waves. Wind. And somewhere far away, his grandmother's warm voice, whispering: "I'm here, my little one. I'm here.".

Because small things hold big stories. And the love of those who are no longer with us lives in simple gifts - in shells, in knitted gloves, in photographs, in smells. You just have to listen.

✨ Small things hold big stories — and the love of those who gave them to us ✨

Grandmother gave Yuri a pink seashell that contained the sounds of the sea.
