It was already dark outside, and only one light bulb was on in little Yulia's room - the one with the lampshade in the shape of a large white daisy. Its light was soft, yellowish, like the light of a candle. It fell on the walls, on the rug with bunnies, on the bookshelf, where all of Yulia's favorite fairy tales stood one by one.

Julia was lying in the crib. She was wearing pajamas with little clouds on them. The blanket was pulled up to her chin. Dad was sitting in a chair next to her — big, warm, in a homemade sweater that smelled of tea and a little bit of books.

Dad had just read a fairy tale to Yulia - about a fox who found a lost star. Usually Yulia would fall asleep quietly to it. But today - not. Dad closed the book and looked at his daughter. Yulia was lying with her eyes wide open and staring at the ceiling.

"Come on, daughter," Dad said quietly. "Close your eyes.".

Julia closed her eyes. But a minute later she opened them again.

Dad wasn't angry. He didn't know how to be angry with Yulia at all—especially in the evening, when she was so small, so quiet, with fluffy hair falling all over the pillow.

"Julia," he asked gently, leaning closer, "what's bothering you, my little swallow?"

Yulia shrugged under the blanket. She didn't know. Something was just spinning inside her—invisibly, quietly, like a little top that had been started and forgotten to stop.

Dad didn't ask any more questions. He didn't tell her to "sleep." He didn't say, "Well, as long as you can." He didn't sigh. He simply moved from the chair to the edge of the crib. Very, very carefully — so as not to shake the mattress.

Then he placed his big, warm hand on the top of Yulia's head and began to slowly stroke her hair.

Dad's hand was warm as freshly baked bread. She would place it on Yulia's head, running it from her forehead back, through her golden bangs, and then come back to start again at her forehead. Slowly. Without haste. As if there was no more important thing in the whole world than stroking Yulia's head.

Dad wasn't telling a new story. He wasn't singing a lullaby. He was just saying softly, barely audible:

— You're here, I'm here... everything's calm... you're here, I'm here... everything's fine...

Yulia heard these words. She didn't understand them literally — the words were very simple, without a plot, without an adventure. But she accepted them with her heart. Each word settled inside her like a feather on water. Quietly. Softly. Without a splash.

Dad's hand stroked. One. Two. Three. Ten. One hundred. Julia lost count.

The spinning top inside began to slow down. It wasn't spinning as fast anymore. It swayed as if it were tired. And then it stopped completely.

“You’re here, I’m here…” Dad continued in a quiet voice. “Everything’s calm…”

Yulia's eyelids began to feel heavy. First one, then the other. She tried to open her eyes again—and couldn't. Her eyes wanted to sleep. They really, really wanted to.

The room became far, far away. The light from the chamomile lampshade was softer than before. The sounds outside the window were quieter. All that remained was the warmth of Dad's hand on my head and his even breathing next to me.

A few minutes later, Julia fell asleep.

Dad felt it when her little body became completely relaxed. When her little hands, which had been clutching the blanket a little, went limp. When one last long sigh escaped from under her eyelashes - and her breathing became even, deep, calm.

But Dad didn't get up. He sat there for a long time.

He looked at his little daughter. He looked at her long eyelashes that lay like shadows on her cheeks. He looked at her tiny nose, at her gently pressed lips, at the fluffy hair on the pillow. It seemed to him that there was nothing more beautiful in the world.

Dad's hand was still on her head—only it wasn't stroking anymore, it was just there. Warm, big, reliable.

Once his grandmother told him: «The best fairy tale is the presence of someone who loves you. Not words. Not actions. Just being there.» Dad didn’t fully understand then. But now he does.

He sat for a moment longer. Then, carefully, with his fingertips, he removed his hand from Yulia's head. He adjusted the blanket. He quietly turned off the chamomile lamp - and the room was plunged into a soft bluish darkness, in which a silvery star outside the window barely glimmered.

Julia was asleep. She was breathing evenly and deeply. Her face was calm, like a little angel's.

If you ever have trouble falling asleep, ask your mom or dad to just sit next to you. They don't need to tell you anything. They don't need to sing. Their silence is enough. The silence of love, in which you can fall asleep peacefully.

Good night, little one. The one who loves you is near. You are here. He is here. All is calm.

✨ The best fairy tale is the quiet presence of someone who loves you ✨

Little Yulia couldn't fall asleep.
