She was very tiny, she had just been born. She was as clear as a drop of dew on a morning daisy, and very curious. She wanted to know everything: where the river of clouds flowed, why the moon was round, what the sleepy sky smelled like.

When Starry Night first opened her bright eyes, older stars twinkled around her. They nodded gently to her: "Hello, little one. Welcome.".

All evening, Zyrochka watched the world. She saw a small window in a house on the ground light up, and there a girl and her mother were sitting at the table. She saw a sleepy bus driving down the road and its yellow light slowly disappearing around a bend. She saw sunflowers falling asleep in someone's garden - hiding their yellow faces in a green collar.

The little star shone so brightly that she didn't even notice how time passed. But then the Moon came up to her. Big, kind, with a gentle silver smile.

"Little one," he said quietly, "it's time for bed.".

"Sleep?" Star was surprised and trembled with her rays. "No, no, I haven't seen the whole sky yet! I don't know what's over there, behind the cloud. I still want to look at that river below.".

It spun, stirred, twinkled brighter. The moon only smiled. He knew this tiny restlessness of all the little stars. He had lulled so many of them already - too many to count.

“Come to me,” said the Moon and extended its silver ray like a hand.

The little star flew up timidly. The moon carefully took it in his silvery hands—warm, soft, like a pillow of mist. He hugged it to himself, as a mother hugs her daughter before going to sleep.

"Now listen. I'll sing you a lullaby. Just like my mother used to sing when I was a very little Moon.".

And the Moon sang. Quietly, softly, tenderly. His voice was like the whisper of the wind in the willows. Like the rustle of a dry leaf falling on the path. Like quiet water in a well.

«Sleep, my little star, the night is still long,» he sang. “Sleep, my little sun, we are still far away. During the day the sky rests. At night we work together - you and me, and your little star sisters. We shine for all the children of the earth. We see them off to sleep and guard their dreams until morning.”

The little star listened. Her rays gradually became softer. She leaned her cheek against the moon's palm. Warm.

«"And when mother-night comes for us," the Moon sang further, "we go to sleep. For to shine even brighter tomorrow, we must rest today. The stars that do not sleep grow dim. The stars that have fallen asleep burn like gold.".

The star yawned. A small star yawn that looked like a tiny spark.

The moon noticed this and smiled even more gently. He slowly rocked her—back and forth, back and forth—like a swing on a quiet pond. A silver ray gently caressed her radiant head.

"Sleep, my little one," whispered the Moon. "Tomorrow night you will wake up again. And you will shine even brighter. And your friends will fly to you. And together you will light someone's way home.".

Star closed her shining eyes. Completely.

She had the first dream in her life. She saw a big, big, biggest star in the sky growing. And tiny sparks flying off it and becoming new little stars. And those stars smiling at her like they were their mother.

This dream was warm, like milk before bedtime.

And the sky became quiet. The moon held the tiny Star in her palm and also lay down on the cloud. The sister stars around her shone evenly and softly so as not to wake the little one.

And now you close your eyes. Listen to how your room breathes evenly. How the nightlight in the corner shines gently. Somewhere high in the sky the Moon holds a little Star in her palm. And your mother holds you with her love - even after she has already turned off the lamp.

Good night, little one. Sleep.

✨ To shine for others, you need to rest yourself; love needs sleep ✨

Little Star had just been born and didn't want to sleep.
