They called her Owl - because when she hooted at night, her voice rolled through the trees with a low "pug-uu, pug-uu", like a distant bell from over the hill.

The owl was not very talkative with the animals. The hares were a little afraid of her. The foxes hurried past her oak tree without raising their noses. The hedgehogs generally thought that owls were a mysterious people and kept to themselves.

But Pugach was not sad. Because she had a friend. The most faithful, the quietest, the brightest friend.

Her friend was the Moon.

Every evening, when the sun was setting over the forest and the shadows were getting long, long, the Owl would fly up to the highest branch of an oak tree, fold her wings, and look up into the sky. And there, among the first stars, he would appear—round, silver, and warm.

"Good evening, Moon," Owl cooed gently. "How are you?"

The moon could not speak in human words. But he answered. With a silver ray that quietly fell on her feathers and tickled her tenderly. Owl felt his warmth, even when the night was cool. She knew: he could hear her.

They could "talk" like this for hours. Owl told him who she had seen during the day. How she flew over the lake and noticed a fish jumping after a mosquito. How she scared a young squirrel that she didn't expect to see in the middle of the day. How a forester carried a big bag of pine cones on his shoulders. The moon listened. And shone. And they were happy.

Then one evening something happened. The sky over the forest became a gray blanket. The clouds crept in, touching the tops of the trees—and where the Moon should have been, there was nothing. Only darkness.

"The moon?" Owl purred softly. "Where are you?"

The clouds were silent.

One night passed. A second. A third. For a whole week a wet, heavy blanket of clouds had hung over the forest. The rain was falling, tapping on the oak leaves, and the Owl was huddled under its wing, hiding its head. Not a single star in the sky. Not a single silver ray.

The second week passed. The clouds did not leave. The forest became dark and lonely.

"He forgot about me," said Owl aloud. "He found someone else. He shines now in someone else's garden.".

She stopped flying to the highest branch. She sat lower - where the sky was not visible. She stopped hooting. The animals noticed - something was wrong with the owl. But they were afraid to approach.

Four whole weeks have passed. Almost a month.

And then one day, in the middle of the night, Owl woke up from a strange feeling. Something warm touched her feathers. She opened her eyes.

The clouds were quietly parting over the forest. First a small crack. Then a larger one. And then a wide, clear one, as if someone had pulled back a curtain.

And he looked out. The moon. Big, full, especially bright—as if it had shone for all the nights that had not shone. It shone so brightly that the tops of the trees turned silver, and the smallest dewdrops glistened in the grass.

"I am here!" he spoke to Owl with his wordless beam. "I am here, my friend.".

The owlet did not move. She sat on a lower branch and looked at him silently. Two small silver coins were reflected in her round eyes.

"I thought you forgot about me," she finally whispered. "I haven't heard from you in a month. A whole month.".

The moon was silent. He knew how to speak only when he was ready - carefully, gently, without haste. And when he spoke, his rays fell on Owl's head, like an adult's hand stroking a frightened child.

"I've always been here, my love," he said quietly. "I haven't gone anywhere. The clouds just came between us. And I was behind them. I couldn't disperse them—it's not my job. But I didn't leave you.".

"But I didn't see you," sighed Owl.

"And I saw you," answered the Moon. "Every night. Through the clouds. I saw you sitting under my wing. As one drop of rain rolled down your feathers. As you sighed. I was with you every evening. You just didn't see me.".

The owl sat very still. Somewhere below, a hedgehog woke up and rustled through the grass. Somewhere in the distance, a young owl screamed. And she looked at her friend and absorbed his words like a sponge absorbs warm milk.

“So…” she said slowly, “the most loyal friends are there even when they’re not visible?”

— Yes, — nodded the Moon with its round face. — And the sun above the clouds. And the stars behind the day. And the one who loves — behind the distance. We are all here. We are just sometimes invisible.

The owl was silent. And then she spread her wings, flew to the highest branch of the oak tree—the same one from which they had once started—and hooted for the first time in a month. Quietly, but clearly:

- Pug-woo. I hear you.

The moon shone in response—warmer, more tenderly, as only it could.

From that day on, Owl was never sad again when clouds gathered over the forest. She still flew up to a branch. She still hooted. Because she knew: someone was listening. Someone was watching. Someone loved—even an invisible one. And she loved in return—through the clouds, through the rain, through everything.

Because this is true friendship.

✨ The most loyal friends are there even when they are not visible ✨

Owl Owl talked to the Moon every night.
