Usually she woke up with a smile on her lips: she thought about her mother's pancakes, about the toys on the carpet, about the neighbor's cat Barsik. But today... her lips were a straight line, as if someone had drawn them with a pencil and forgotten to draw them.

Olesya sat up in bed and rubbed her eyes.

“Where have you gone, my smile?” she asked in a whisper.

She looked under the pillow. There was no smile there—only soft feathers and a warm mark from her cheek. She looked under the bed—there lay a lost sock and a round wooden button, but there was no smile there either. In the closet, among the dresses and sweaters, there was nothing but the smell of lavender.

Olesya pursed her lips and went barefoot to the kitchen.

There was a smell of warm bread and vanilla milk. Mom was standing by the stove, flipping round golden pancakes on a frying pan. Seeing her daughter, Mom smiled broadly — but Olesya didn’t answer. She couldn’t.

“Mom,” the girl said seriously, “I lost my smile.”.

Mom put down the spatula, wiped her hands with an apron, and squatted down to be at the same height as Olesya.

"Is it gone?" Mom made a surprised face. "That's a mess. Did you look carefully?"

"Everywhere," Olesya sighed. "Under the pillow, in the closet, even under the bed.".

"You know," her mother gently held her by the shoulders, "a smile is such a tricky thing. You can't find it yourself. Someone else brings it. Someone you do something nice for.".

Olesya squinted.

— So it has to be earned?

"Not exactly. You have to give it away and it will come back.".

Olesya didn't fully understand, but nodded. Mom gave her a warm pancake with honey, kissed her on the forehead, and said:

"Go take a walk in the garden. Maybe your smile is waiting there.".

The garden smelled of wet grass and yesterday's rain. Red-green apples hung on the branches of the apple tree, bathed in the sun. Olesya walked along the path, past a raspberry bush, past a wooden bench where Grandma Zoya, the old neighbor from behind the fence, liked to sit.

And then she saw Grandma Zoya. She was standing on tiptoe, stretching her hand out to the apple tree, and she couldn't reach the largest apple. Her fingers would just touch the golden side - and then break off again.

“Grandma, I’ll help!” Olesya shouted and ran to her.

The girl placed a small wooden stool under the apple tree that stood by the fence and carefully climbed onto it. The apple was now at the height of her fingers. She reached out, grabbed it with both hands, and gently plucked it.

— Hold on, grandma.

Grandma Zoya took the apple. Her eyes became warm, warm, like raspberry tea.

"Thank you, my little swallow," she said, running her finger along Olesya's cheek. "You know, this is for my granddaughter. He's coming tomorrow, and I wanted to make him a pie from this very apple. The biggest one.".

And at that moment Olesya felt something strange. The corners of her lips pulled up on their own. First a little. Then a little more. And then — wide, really, with teeth.

"Grandma!" Olesya exclaimed in surprise. "My smile is back!"

Grandma Zoya laughed a quiet, warm laugh—like a bell from a distant temple.

"Of course she came back. She didn't disappear, little one. She was just waiting." Smiles are like sparks: they live inside us, but they only shine when we do something good for someone else. If you keep a smile to yourself, it dims. But if you share it, it burns brighter than a star.".

Olesya thought about it. Then she nodded:

"Then I'll look for someone to give it to.".

On the way home, she saw a little sparrow whose wing was tangled in a cotton thread. Olesya carefully untangled it - and the bird flew back to the branch, chirping "thank you" like a sparrow. And Olesya smiled again - even wider.

When she got home, her mother looked at her and didn't ask any more questions. She just hugged her, sat her down at the table, and handed her pancakes.

— I see you found what you were looking for.

"I found it," Olesya nodded, her mouth full. "It turns out they're not looking for it in the closet. They're looking for it in people.".

From that day, when Olesya felt sad — and it happens to everyone — she knew what to do. She would go out into the garden, into the yard, into the street — and look for someone who needed help. Even if it was small. Even if it was just one apple from a branch. And every time she did a good deed, her smile would return — bright, sunny, her own.

Because smiles, as Grandma Zoya said, come back to those who give them. And this is perhaps the best secret that little girls learn.

✨ Smiles return to those who give them ✨

Little Olesya woke up without a smile and went looking for it — in the closet, under the bed, in the garden.
