Not about sweets. Not about toys. Not about sweet strawberry ice cream in a waffle cone.

Timko dreamed of becoming a pilot.

Every morning, when Timko woke up, he would run to the balcony door and look up at the sky. If a plane flew by—a real one, with a white tail and a silver belly—Timko would clap his hands.

"Look, Dad! I'll do it too!"

Dad smiled and nodded. He knew that when a child dreams out loud, all he needed was a little help and the dream would grow.

When Timko was six, he learned how to fold paper airplanes. Dad showed him once — and Timko memorized them. In the evenings, in his room, Timko folded dozens. One after another. White, red, checkered — from notebook covers, from newspapers, from wrapping paper.

And then he launched them from the balcony.

This was the best moment of the day. Timko climbed onto a stool, held the plane above his head, and let it fly. The plane smoothly circled, past the balcony railing, past a blooming lilac bush, and landed softly in the garden, among the grass.

Timko ran down and looked for his "squadron." Sometimes the planes lay side by side, in a neat row. Sometimes they were far apart, like soldiers after a battle.

One morning, when the dew was still on the garden, Timko again launched his favorite airplane — blue, with wings made from a checkered notebook. This airplane was special — Timko had made it from paper on which he had written his first letters. A kind of document. A testament to a dream.

The plane rose higher than usual. It seemed to really want to fly. It made one circle - and... caught on the branch of an old pear tree that grew in the garden.

Timko stood and looked down.

"Come on, fly!" he whispered. "Don't stop.".

But there was no wind. The plane hung between the leaves, neither falling nor taking off. It just hung. A captive of a branch.

Timko stood there for a long time. He didn't cry—he was a serious boy. But inside he felt something quietly sinking.

“Dad,” he finally called out. “Dad, can you come?”

Dad came. He looked up, shielding his eyes from the sun. And he said:

— Yes. High.

"I won't make it," sighed Tymko.

"Alone, no. And together? I'll bring the ladder now.".

Dad went to the garage and pulled out an old wooden ladder. It was tall—higher than the house, it seemed to Timk. Dad placed it under the pear tree.

"Let's go together," he said. "I'll climb up, and you hold on from below. Just hold on tight. Remind me where the branch is.".

Timko nodded seriously. He grabbed the ladder with both hands and looked up from the bottom as his father slowly climbed it. One step. Another step.

"I see a plane," Dad called from above. "I'll get it now.".

Dad reached down, carefully removed the airplane from the branch, and slowly began to descend. The sun's rays broke through the leaves and danced on Dad's sweater in golden spots.

When Dad stepped on the ground, he handed the plane to Timkov.

"Hold on, son. It's intact.".

Tymko took the plane. It was a little wet from the morning dew, but intact. Thin wings. A beak. And the inscription "A-B-V" on the barrel — in Tymko's hand.

Timko pressed it to his heart.

"Dad," he asked, "when I grow up, will I be able to become a real pilot? Not made of paper. Real. With silver and sky.".

Dad squatted down to be at the same height as Timko. He looked his son seriously in the eyes.

“You know, son,” he said quietly, “all the great pilots started like this. With paper airplanes. With a dream that wouldn’t fit in a room. And…” Dad smiled, “and with Dad holding a ladder.”.

Timko hugged his dad. He held the airplane in his hand, not letting go.

That evening, Timko put his plane on the shelf above the bed. He didn't fly it again—he regretted it. And at night, when everyone was asleep, the little blue plane with the crooked letters "A-B-V" watched its owner sleep.

Many years later, when Timko actually entered flight school and was about to take the helm for the first time, he took with him a paper airplane. The same one — yellowed, with frayed wings. He put it in the inside pocket of his flight jacket. Like an amulet.

Because big dreams, as his dad taught him, start with small steps to the sky. And with those holding the ladder.

✨ Big dreams start with small steps to the sky - and with those holding the ladder ✨

Timko dreamed of becoming a pilot and folded paper airplanes.
