Not a new one—an old one, a re-made one by her grandmother that had once belonged to her mother when she was a child. The sweater was blue, with white buttons, and thin cuffs. Anna wore it every day—both home and for a walk, and sometimes she even went to bed in it when her mother wasn't looking.

There were five buttons on the sweater. Small, mother-of-pearl, with four holes — real ones, from some distant past, from an era when sweaters were still sewn by mothers' mothers.

One winter day, Anna jumped over the garden fence—it was stupid, but who among the children hasn't jumped over the fence?—and her jacket caught on a hook. "Jingle!" she heard. And again: "Jingle-jingle." The buttons flew into the snow like little snowflakes.

Anna looked at her sweater. It was hanging on her — without one, two, three… all five buttons. The bottom of the sweater was hanging loose without a clasp.

Anna knelt in the snow and searched. She found four of the five. One was gone. Forever. Among the white snow, the most beautiful one—with its thin specks—disappeared.

Anna returned home with a sad face.

Grandma looked and nodded.

"Well," she said, "it's time.".

— Time for what, grandma?

— Time to teach you how to sew.

Grandma brought her old box from the other room. Wooden, with carved flowers on the lid, a small clasp in front. Anna knew this box - sometimes Grandma would open it in her presence and show her her "treasures". Inside were:

— balls of colored thread. Red, blue, green, black, white — all colors.

— needles in a small iron box with magnetization so they don't get lost.

— pins with multi-colored heads.

— scissors. Small, sharp, with a handle in the shape of a stork.

— thimble — silver, with a small pattern.

— and a box of old buttons. Lots and lots of them. Black, white, colored, with flowers.

"Sit down," said the grandmother, opening the box. "Today I will teach you.".

Anna sat down on a stool next to him. Her heart was pounding—from curiosity, fear, and respect all at once.

Grandma put on her glasses with thin frames. She took a small white mother-of-pearl button from the box—exactly the same one on Anna's sweater.

“This is the one we’ll use as a replacement for the one we lost,” she explained.

Then she took a thread — white, thin. She threaded it through the needle. Anna looked — the needle was so small, the hole was even smaller. Grandma bent the thread, took aim, and threaded it through on the first try. Anna thought it was magic.

"Try it yourself," said the grandmother and gave her a second needle.

Anna tried. The thread missed the hole. Once. Two. Three. On the fourth one, it hit! She screamed with joy.

"Well done. Now watch me make a stitch.".

Grandma showed me. The needle went through the fabric, then through the buttonhole, then back into the fabric. She repeated this four times for each hole.

Anna tried. And that's where it all began.

The needle pricked. Not much, but unpleasant. Anna screamed and dropped it.

— Oh, grandma, I can't.

"You can. Hold the needle differently - not by the very tip, but higher. Like this.".

Anna tried again. This time the thread got tangled in a knot. She pulled - the thread wouldn't go. She pulled harder - it got tangled even worse.

— Grandma, the thread doesn't obey!

Grandma didn't scold her. She just smiled softly and took the thread. She untangled it slowly - her fingers were as delicate as butterflies.

"Look, little one," she said gently. "The needle doesn't like to be rushed. It likes to be attentive. If you hurry, it pricks. If you pull, the thread breaks. But if you are calm, breathe evenly, and look attentively, the needle becomes your friend. Do you understand?"

Anna nodded seriously. She took a deep breath. She tried again—slowly. Without rushing.

The needle went through the fabric. It didn't prick. Anna pulled the thread tight—carefully, not too hard. The button fell off.

First!

Anna jumped for joy.

"Grandma! I did it!"

"Well done. Now four more.".

The second button lay flat. Anna could already feel the rhythm. The third one came out a little crooked—she was in a hurry. But it held firmly. The fourth and fifth—are as straight as a ruler.

An hour later, the jacket had all five buttons. Not the same, not perfect—there were microscopic differences between them. One higher. One lower. One a little sideways. But all of them were hers. Sewn by her hands.

Anna looked at her work for a long time. Something warmed inside her—a warmth she had never felt before. It wasn't joy from the gift. It was something more—pride in what she had done.

She was eight when it happened. For her birthday, her grandmother gave her her own little kit—a tiny box with needles, threads of different colors, and three colorful buttons for extra. Anna carried the kit in her backpack.

A month later, an incident occurred at school.

During the break, Anna saw her classmate Sasha near the cloakroom. He was standing and almost crying - the zipper on his jacket had broken. The jacket wouldn't close. It was freezing outside.

“What happened?” Anna asked.

"The zipper... came off," Sasha muttered. "Mom's still at work. I can't get home without my jacket.".

Anna looked. She looked at the jacket. The zipper was indeed broken—a small metal tab had fallen out. But she saw that the zipper could still be temporarily mended—with a few stitches.

“Do you want me to help you?” she asked. “I have some thread and needles with me.”.

Sasha's eyes widened.

- Can you do it?

— I learned yesterday.

She took out her little set. The whole school circle gathered around them. The teacher, Elena Petrovna, just smiled from a distance and didn't interfere. In five minutes—slowly, carefully, as her grandmother taught—Anna mended the clasp. Now it was holding.

Sasha looked at Anna with round eyes.

— You can do it!

Anna nodded. Her heart felt warm. Only this time it was a different warmth. Not from having done something herself. But from having been able to help someone else.

She realized that this was the best thing her grandmother had given her. Not needles. Not threads. But skills. Because when you know how to do something yourself, you can also help someone else. And this is the greatest magic.

✨ When you can do something yourself, you can also help someone else ✨

Anna lost all the buttons on her sweater.
