They were like insects on a page to her—many, small, moving in her eyes, unwilling to stay still. Her mother would show her the primer: "Look, this is A, this is B." Sofiyka would nod, run her finger through them—and in a minute she would forget.

"I don't want to read," she told her mother. "You better read to me.".

Mom read, but said:

"Someday you'll want to do it yourself. Then you won't be able to stop.".

"No," Sofiyka said firmly. "I don't want to.".

She was six and very confident.

One day, Dad came home from work with a package under his arm. Not really from work—he said he had gone to an old bookstore where the books smelled of dust and time, and there were cats sitting on the shelves.

"Sofiya," Dad said solemnly, "I have a gift for you. A special one.".

Sofiyka carefully opened the package. Inside was a book. Not very large, in a hardcover the color of sky blue. On the cover was written in gold letters: "Magic Book.".

“What’s in it?” asked Sofiyka.

"And this is special," Dad sat down on the edge of the sofa. "This book is special. She can read it herself. Out loud.".

Sophie didn't believe it.

— Dad, don't make it up.

— I'm serious. But there's one condition. A book only reads when there's quiet attention next to it. If you move around, chatter, make noise - it's silent. And if you sit quietly and listen - there will be a voice. Soft, like mom's bedtime song.

Sofiyka squinted. She loved her dad, but still — it was so hard to believe.

— Show me.

"I can't. The book only reads to you. Try it yourself.".

Sofiyka took the book. She sat down on the carpet by the window, opened the cover. On the first page were pretty colored letters. She looked - silence.

— Dad, it's not working!

"I told you. Silence and attention. Sit more comfortably. Fold your arms. Look at the page as if you were expecting something from it.".

Sofiyka sighed. But she did as her father said. She sat down more comfortably, folded her hands on her knees, and looked at the first page — calmly, without rushing.

And then - I heard a voice.

It was quiet. Soft. Almost a whisper. He read:

«"In a land far, far away, where the clouds touched the mountains, there lived a little princess named Arina. She loved to embroider gloves for dragons..."»

Sofiyka froze. She wasn't breathing. The voice continued—about Arina, about dragons, about tiny embroidery with silver thread. Sofiyka listened, and pictures formed in her mind. A princess with red hair. A dragon sneezing from dust. A silver thread that sparkled like a stream.

When the voice fell silent, Sofiyka raised her head. The room was already dark. Dad was quietly preparing dinner in the kitchen.

"Dad! I've been listening! All day!"

Dad came and hugged her.

"I told you. Charming.".

From that day on, Sofiyka sat down with a book every day. She began to love this special moment — the silence, the attention, the voice of a fairy tale. The book read to her about a hunter who befriended a deer. About a girl who spun threads from the fog. About a musician who played for the mermaids.

But a week later, Sofiyka noticed: her voice had become a little quieter. Not as clear as it was at first.

A week later, it was even quieter. Sofiyka leaned over and put her ear to the page.

A week later, Sofiyka could barely hear. Her voice would whisper and then break off.

"Dad!" she cried with tears in her eyes. "The book is breaking!"

Dad came, picked up the book, and looked at it.

— Hmm. Strange. But look carefully at the page, Sofiyka. Maybe it's not broken. Maybe you're already starting to hear the words yourself — inside yourself.

Sofiyka didn't understand anything. But she bent over the page. She looked at the letters - intently, like never before. And suddenly... the letters formed into words. Words - into sentences. Sentences - into a story.

«The little hedgehog rolled to his hole…» — Sofiyka read aloud. — «An autumn pear got stuck in his needles…»

Sophie looked at her father with round eyes.

— Dad, am I… reading?

Dad smiled. He nodded slowly.

"Yes, my dear. You are reading.".

From that day on, the book fell completely silent. Quietly, like a good friend who had done his job. But Sofiyka was not sad - because now she had her own voice. She read herself. And not only this book - but others as well. Everyone who was at home.

She carried the Magic Book with her—even to school. Not to listen—she didn't need to listen anymore.
