It seemed tasteless to him. Fresh. Boring. White — and white is boring. It had no taste — except "a little sweet." It had no smell — except "a little cow-like." It wasn't cheerful — like juice or compote.

Every morning his mother put a glass of milk in front of him. Every morning David made a sad face.

— I don't want to.

"You must, son. Milk makes you strong.".

— I'm strong enough.

Mom smiled and didn't scold. She loved her David. But still, the milk stood on the table, unfinished. Sometimes she would pour it into the pot for cutlets. Sometimes she would give it to the cat Murik. But most of the time, David would cheat, pour it into a pot with a ficus and run away.

This went on for two weeks, until one morning my mother got to thinking. She was sitting at the table, holding a glass of milk in her hands, and thinking. Her lips were smiling - she had an idea.

“David,” she said when her son came running into the kitchen in his pajamas with rockets on. “I have a secret for you.”.

"What?" David froze. He loved mysteries.

Mom looked him seriously in the eyes. She even lowered her voice.

“You know, you think this is regular milk, right?” she pointed at the glass. “This isn’t regular.”.

- And which one?

"This is… magic milk. Do you understand? Special. It comes from a small farm in the mountains. There is a cow there that is fed golden grass. And its milk is special. It makes boys become heroes. Like real Cossacks.".

David narrowed his eyes suspiciously.

— Is it true?

— Try it. You'll see for yourself.

Davidko looked at the glass. At his mother. At the glass again. His heart pounded with curiosity. What if it was really?

He took the glass with both hands—carefully. He brought it to his lips. He sniffed. He took a small sip. Then a larger one. Then more and more, until the glass was empty.

David wiped his mouth with the sleeve of his pajamas.

— Now?

Mom winked at Dad, who was finishing his coffee in the kitchen.

"Now," said Dad solemnly, "try to guess how much the elephant weighs. I'll show you a picture.".

"Well..." Davydko tensed up like a true hero. "A ton?"

Dad showed his phone. On the screen was an African elephant. Below was the caption: «An African elephant weighs about a ton.» In reality, it was more, but who would argue?

"Bogatyr!" shouted Dad. "You know!"

David was beaming.

At the second glass — in the evening of the same day — Davydko danced the dragon dance. He jumped, his sleeve twisted, and at the end he clapped his hands. Mom filmed it on her phone. Both he and Dad applauded.

On the third glass — the next morning — mom gave Davydek a more serious task:

"Can you, hero, carry my mother's cast-iron pot from the kitchen to the pantry? I can't - my back hurts.".

The pot was on the table. Large, black, with a handle. There was nothing inside - it was empty, but heavy. Old, from years gone by.

Davidko came over. He took a deep breath. He grabbed the handle with both hands. He pulled. The pot didn't move.

Dad watched from afar with a smile.

Davidko gritted his teeth. «I am a hero,» he thought. «I have drunk three glasses of magic milk.» He took another sip, harder.

The pot moved. Slowly at first. Then it creaked on the table and rose.

Davidko held it. He walked step by step. Through the kitchen. Through the hallway. To the pantry. The door was open — mom was waiting.

He put the pot down on the shelf.

— That's it!

Mom and Dad clapped their hands. Everyone laughed. David was prouder than ever in his life.

This went on for a week.

Every day, Davydko drank his three glasses. Every day, he came up with some new heroic deed. He brought his mother a small suitcase from the second floor. He helped his father put up a new shelf. He even helped the neighbor's grandmother lift a heavy bag of vegetables.

Every time, I grew. Not in height. In self-belief.

But one evening, when David was already lying in bed and staring at the ceiling, and his mother was sitting next to him and scratching his head, he said something strange.

"Mom..." his voice was quiet and thoughtful.

— What, son?

— You know, I thought for a long time.

— About what?

— Milk is not magic.

Mom held her hand on his head.

— Why do you think that?

— Well… — Davydko turned to the barrel and looked into his mother’s eyes. — It’s just ordinary milk. You buy it yourself at the store. I saw the package. It says «Our Farm.» Of course.

— Maybe ordinary.

— Yes, it's normal. It wasn't the milk that made me a hero. It was me.".

Mom was silent for a long time. Then she leaned over and kissed her son on the forehead.

"You know what's really magical, my dear?"

— What?

— Not milk. But our faith in someone. I always believed in you — from the moment you were born. I knew you were a hero. Only you didn't know it yourself. And now — you believed in yourself. And this is real magic.

David hugged his mother tightly. He didn't cry, but his heart was trembling.

— I love you, Mom.

— And I love you, my hero.

From that day on, Davydko drank milk without any problems.
