He had lived here for forty years. He gave birth to crane chicks. He flew across the sea to the south, returning in the spring. He knew every star above the swamp, every willow by the shore.

This autumn began as usual - the clucking of the flock, a cheerful flight. The cranes lined up in a wedge, preparing for the long journey. The gray one also took his place.

But when the wedge rose, Gray flew away - and felt: his wings were not holding. He flapped hard - and they were heavy, heavy. As if made of wet sand. He spun over the swamp a little more - and fell down, carefully sitting down in his old place.

The flock circled above him. The young crane came down - "Grandpa, what's wrong with you?" The gray one croaked softly: "Fly. I can't anymore. The old one stopped. Fly without me.".

The flock cried out plaintively - and flew on. The sound of their wings disappeared behind the clouds. The gray one was left alone in the whole swamp. The gray sky, the bare shores, the first snow began to fall.

He lived another week. He ate frozen frogs, plucked dry sedge. And then came a severe frost. The swamp was covered with ice. The gray one stood on one leg under the willow. He lowered his head. He waited until he had no strength left. He thought about the warm afternoon, which he could no longer reach.

That night, the St. Nicholas night came. The snow was falling heavily, quietly. The gray-haired man stood with his eyes closed. He could hardly feel his paws anymore.

Suddenly — warmth. Not scorching, but soft. Like the spring sun. The crane opened his eyes. Before him stood a tall old man in white and gold robes. In his hand was a staff, on his head a mitre, a white beard down to his waist. In the other hand — a large warm woolen scarf.

The old man carefully draped the scarf around Gray's neck. The warmth immediately went all the way to his heart. Crane inhaled the air and felt himself come to life.

"It's not your time, Gray-haired," Nikolai said gently. "You'll still see spring. And your grandchildren's cranes. Just endure the winter. I'll help you.".

He took a handful of golden grains from his bosom. He threw them into the snow. The grains bloomed - green reeds grew around the swamp, even under the snow. Fish started in the hole. A warm hole appeared near the willow - lined with dry leaves.

"You'll stay here. And in the spring, you'll see your people. They'll come back. They'll be waiting for you. You not only know how to fly, you know how to meet people. That's also an important thing.".

The saint left. The gray-haired man stood for a long time. He did not believe it. But the grains really bloomed. The hole really warmed. The scarf warmed his neck. And the swamp no longer seemed strange.

All winter, Gray lived in a cozy corner. He called to the snowflakes, looked at the stars. And when the first swallows flew in in March, he heard a distant croak. The flock was returning. Gray spread his wings - they were strong again. He met his own first. A young crane, his grandson's son, saw his grandfather - and trembled with joy: "Gray is alive!" The whole swamp hummed with croaking. And Gray stood and thought: sometimes the greatest gift is to wait for spring. Just wait.

💛 As long as someone remembers you, you're not alone.

The old crane could not fly south in the winter - his wings were tired.
