It was called Teple - because that was how it had been called by our great-grandfathers, and the name stuck. There were not many houses in the village - twenty, maybe thirty. A narrow road led here from behind the forest, winding between apple trees and out onto a square where there was an old linden tree, two wells and a wooden bench.

Grandma Palazhka often sat on that bench.

Grandma Palazhka was small—really small, like a teenager. Her feet barely touched the ground when she sat on the bench. Her shoulders were narrow, like a bird's. Her hands were thin, with small brown spots, like those on a ripe leaf. But her eyes—blue like the sky in June—shined as if two little stars were burning in them.

Grandma Palazhka knew one truth. One, but a big one.

“Love is the most precious thing,” she said.

She spoke slowly. Simply. Without unnecessary words. Just like that — «love is the most precious thing» — and looked at you with her blue eyes, and you understood: she doesn’t know this from books. Not from old legends. She knows it with her body, her heart, with every wrinkle.

Her grandchildren came to visit her. Every summer. Seven grandchildren, then twelve great-grandchildren. Grandma Palazhka would sit them on a rug at her feet and treat them to melted milk with foam. The milk stood in a clay pot, covered with a slice of bread. It smelled of warmth and a little smoke — from the stove, where it had been simmering for half an hour.

"Grandma," asked little Tarasyk, "what is the most important thing in life?"

Grandma Palazhka smoothed his bangs.

"Love, son. Love is the most precious thing.".

— And the gold?

"Gold is metal. Metal won't keep you warm at night.".

— And the car?

"The car carries the body. It doesn't carry the heart.".

— And the big house?

"A house is just walls. Without love, the wind blows through it.".

Tarasik listened and thought. He was small, but his grandmother's words settled in his chest like seeds waiting for spring.

This is how grandchildren grew up. This is how great-grandchildren grew up. Everyone remembered the little grandmother on the bench and her simple truth.

When they grew up and went to the big cities—where the electric lights shined, where the cars rumbled, where the storefronts were full of everything shiny—there, in those cities, other people were chasing something else. Money. Positions. Expensive things. Something they called "success.".

But grandmother's grandchildren did it differently.

They worked, of course. They studied. They built. But when they had a choice — where to invest an extra hour of their life — they chose something else. They called their mother in the evening — just like that, for no reason. "How are you, mom?" — they asked and listened. Two minutes, five, twenty — as long as needed.

We drove all over town to visit our dad on the weekend. Even though we were tired. Even though we had other plans.

They hugged the children in the morning — for a long, long time, with their noses in their hair, with their eyes closed, inhaling the scent of warm sleep.

They put a hand on a friend's shoulder when they were having a hard time. They sat in silence. They didn't give advice - they were just there.

And what they had — those grandmother's grandchildren — wasn't gold, not a car, not a big house. They had warmth. Peace. Home — not in the walls, but in the chest.

People in the cities noticed. They asked:

"Why are you always so easygoing? Why don't you seem to need anything?"

"But how can I not?" smiled the grandson. "I need a lot. I need my mother to be healthy. I need my child to hug me in the evening. I need my friend not to be lonely. The rest are details.".

People watched — and either envied or learned. Someone laughed: "Where is the ambition?" And someone thought about it. And he also started calling his mother. And he also started hugging his child longer. And something warm appeared in his life that had been lost before.

That's how Grandma's truth spread around the world. Quietly. Without trumpets. Without posters. Simply from person to person — like a candle lighting another candle, and it burns, but the first one doesn't get smaller.

When many years had passed, Grandma Palazhka passed away. Not in grief—in peace. She went to bed in the evening with a smile, asked one of her grandchildren to read her a short prayer—and in the morning she was gone. Everyone said, «She flew away like an angel.».

The grandchildren gathered. Many grandchildren — from all over. Some came from across the sea, some from beyond the mountains. They all gathered in Teply Selo.

They buried their grandmother in a small cemetery, on a hill overlooking the entire region.

And then they consulted and built a chapel.

Not big. Not magnificent. Small, like grandma herself. With whitewashed walls, with a wooden cross, with carved doors. Inside — a bench for two, an image of the Virgin Mary, and a window through which sunlight falls in a strip.

Above the door is a stone tablet. On it are carved three words in simple letters:

«"Love is the most precious thing.".

People walk by. They come up. They read. At first — as if by chance. Then — more slowly. And then — something in their chest stirs. And they walk on — to the village, to the city, to their home — and for some reason the first thing they do is hug their own. Mother, child, husband, wife. Just like that. For no reason.

A hundred years later, the village of Teple still stood on a hill. Everything was still blooming. Children's laughter could be heard in it. On a bench under a linden tree sat new grandmothers - those who had once been little girls, drinking melted milk with foam. They themselves were already telling their grandchildren:

— Love is the most precious thing.

And the grandchildren listened. And the seeds fell into their hearts. And a quiet, warm world grew within them.

You don't have to be a hero in a shiny uniform to change the world. It's enough to be a little grandmother with a shop, with melted milk - and one big truth in your blue eyes.

✨ Love is the most precious thing a person has ✨

A little grandmother from a small village knew a simple truth: «Love is the most precious thing.» She passed this truth on to her grandchildren.
