Not gold, not silver — but a simple clay one, in the shape of a chubby pig with a pink patch and a sly eye. Grandma had molded it herself when Tony was five. The pig stood on the windowsill, next to a cactus and a photo of his grandfather, and looked at the world with an eye that seemed to hide a small smile.

That piggy bank was special. Tonya didn't put his hard-earned pennies or gift money into it. He threw a coin in there for every good deed. That's what his grandmother decided. "Not for your wallet, son. For your heart. So you can see how much good you've already done.".

Monday. Tonya helped his grandmother carry a net of potatoes from the store — so heavy that his fingers turned red. He came home, took one coin from the shelf, and put it in his piggy bank. "Day.".

Tuesday. Shared a candy with a friend in the yard. Not half - a whole. Tossed a second coin. "Day.".

Wednesday. He wiped his little brother's nose with a handkerchief because he couldn't do it himself. Third coin. "Day.".

Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Watered grandma's violets. Picked up crumbs from the table. Picked up an old cat bowl and poured water for the neighbor's Barsik. "Day. Day. Day.".

A month passed. The piggy bank became heavy. Tonya held it with both hands, pressed it to his chest and heard something inside tinkling softly - like a handful of small sunny stars. A warm evening ray shone through the window. It smelled of his mother's borscht and fresh bread.

"Grandma," Tonya said proudly, "I already have a lot of good deeds. Look.".

Grandma smiled—calmly, without haste. Her eyes were like two warm cups of tea.

— I see, Cossack. Well done.

Tonya sat on a stool by the window, put the piggy bank next to it and looked at it. He felt good. Warmth in his chest. He thought: "I've done a lot. I'm a good boy.".

And then - he looked out the window.

A girl was walking down the street. She was small, about five years old. She was wearing an oversized coat—probably someone's old one, with a sagging collar. Her shoes had worn-out toes. She was holding a small, crumpled bag in her hands. There was no doll or teddy bear in it. The girl stopped near the lamppost and looked at her hands, as if wondering where to go next.

Tonya thought for a moment. He held the piggy bank in his hands and felt that it was no longer as warm as it had been a moment ago. It was as if something inside it had become cold.

«"I have done a lot of good," he thought. "And she... and she is cold. She has nothing. And my piggy bank is full.".

Tonya got up. He went into the kitchen, where his mother was cutting tomatoes.

“Mom,” he said in a quiet voice, “and that girl… who is she?”

Mom looked out the window. She sighed.

— This is Darka. She and her mother recently arrived. They are having a hard time right now. They don't have much of anything.

Tonya was silent. Then he pressed the piggy bank closer to his chest.

"Mom. I want to give her everything. What's in the piggy bank.".

Mom put down the knife. Wiped her hands. Crouched down to be close.

— Everything?

"That's all. Because I'm already warm. And she's not.".

Mom didn't say anything. She just stroked his head—gently, like stroking a kitten.

Tonya went into the yard with the piggy bank. He carefully placed it on an old stump near the fence. He took a hammer from the toolbox. He knocked once, not hard. The pig just shook. He knocked a second time - the clay shell cracked, and silver and copper glittered inside, as if a small underground treasure had been discovered.

The coins spilled out onto the stump. Tonya gathered them into his palms—cold, tinkling. He brought them to his mother.

— This is Darcy. Buy her something. A toy. Or boots. Or a warm scarf. Your choice.

Mom took the coins and looked at her son as if she were seeing him for the first time.

Two days later, Darka was walking down the street in a new knitted scarf - soft, red, with white snowflakes. She was holding a small plush bunny in her hands. Darka saw Tonya in the window and waved. Tonya waved back. His chest felt warmer than ever before.

He didn't buy a new piggy bank. He didn't want to. Because now he knew one important thing.

Kindness is not for counting. Not for collecting like coins and seeing how much you have. Kindness is like bread: delicious while it is warm. It should be distributed immediately, while it still has its smell and steam.

Tonya grew up. He didn't have a piggy bank. But he had many friends and a full heart. And his grandmother left the piggy bank with a crack on the windowsill - as a memory of that evening when the little boy understood something adult.

✨ Kindness is not put in a piggy bank - it is given away while it is still warm ✨

Little Tonya would throw a coin into the piggy bank for every good deed.
