The room smelled of dust and a little coffee—granny downstairs was brewing her morning cup.

Artem pulled out the toys one by one. The cubes — leave them. The teddy bear — leave them. The dinosaur without a tail — throw them away. The car…

He pulled a small metal car from the bottom of the box. It had once been bright red. Now the paint was peeling off the roof, one wheel was wobbly, and there was a long scratch on the door.

"Grandma!" Artem shouted. "I'm throwing this one away.".

Grandma came, wiping her hands on her apron. She looked at the typewriter. She took it in her palm. Her thin fingers stroked the scratched sides like a kitten.

“Artem,” she said quietly, “do you know what this is?”

— An old car. It's worn out.

"It's Dad's. His grandfather bought it for him at the fair when he was like you.".

Artem fell silent. He imagined his dad as a little boy. With this very car in his hands.

"It's still a mess," he muttered, now more quietly.

"Shall we try?" Grandma smiled. "I have a jar of red paint in the closet. And a little time.".

They sat down on the carpet. Grandma brought newspapers, a jar, and a thin brush. She twisted the wheel with a small screwdriver — and it stopped wobbling. Artem held the car while Grandma painted.

The red paint lay evenly on the old metal. It smelled sharp, but somehow pleasant. The scratch disappeared under the first layer. Then under the second.

"Grandma, why bother? I'd buy a new one.".

Grandma didn't answer right away. She dipped her brush. Then she said quietly:

"What if someone throws away your teddy bear because his paw is sewn up? Should I buy him a new one too?"

Artem quickly glanced at the bear. At its patched paw. At its rubbed ear.

"No. My teddy bear. He was with me when I was sick.".

"So. Things like friends. You just have to look closely.".

When the paint dried, the car stood on the windowsill. Not new. A little uneven on one side. But alive. Red as a morning apple.

In the evening, dad returned from work. Artem ran to meet him with the car in his hands.

"Dad! Look!"

Dad looked. Then he bent down, took the typewriter in his palm. And suddenly — Artem saw — his eyes sparkled a little.

"It's mine. I thought it was long gone.".

"Grandma helped. I wanted to throw it away.".

Dad sat Artem on his knee. He placed the typewriter between them on the table.

— Do you know, son, how this car drives?

— How?

"Just like the new one. Only it already has a history.".

Artem spun the wheel. It spun smoothly. The car drove across the table, right to the edge.

That night, Artem placed it next to the teddy bear. A car, a teddy bear, a dinosaur without a tail — he decided that tomorrow he and his grandmother would sew him a new one.

Artem pushed the waste box under the bed. It was empty.

💡 Old doesn't mean useless.

Artem wanted to throw away his old, scratched typewriter.
