Mykyta's second grade class had math today — his favorite subject. Usually.

But today something went wrong.

Teacher Olena Sergiyevna was talking about problems with differences. On the board she wrote: «Tarasyk has three apples, and Sofiyka has two more. How many does Sofiyka have?» Mykyta understood this.

Then she wrote another: "Sofiya has five apples, and Tarasyk has two less. How many does Tarasyk have?" And then something got mixed up in Nikita's head. The word "less" and the word "Tarasyk's" somehow didn't add up. He tried to count - and it came out either seven, then three, then seven again.

Olena Sergiyevna continued to explain. The rest of the children nodded and wrote down. Nikita looked at his neighbor Artem - he was writing the number "3" and looked confident.

«"If I raise my hand, everyone will laugh," thought Nikita. "They will think I'm stupid. Because I didn't understand such a simple task.".

He looked down at his notebook. He wrote "3." Then he erased it. He wrote "7." Then he erased it. He left a blank space.

Elena Sergeevna came closer to the board.

— Does everyone understand? If you have a question, raise your hand. Questions are the shortest path to knowledge.

Nikita's hand lay on the desk. It was as heavy as if it were made of stone.

“Perhaps someone has a question?” repeated Elena Sergeevna. Her voice was calm, not mocking. She always spoke to the children as if each one was an important person.

Nikita took a deep breath. He thought about his mother. Yesterday, when Nikita hesitated whether to ask his father what a word in a book meant or not, his mother said: "Ask, son. Questions are not weakness. They are strength. Because those who ask grow.".

Nikita raised his hand. Not high. A little. But he raised it.

— Nikita?

— Olena Sergeevna. I… I don’t understand. The second task. Why does Tarasyk have less and not Sofiyka?

The class fell silent. Nikita expected laughter. But there was no laughter. Olena Sergiyevna even smiled — broadly, as happens when a person is happy.

— What a good question, Nikita! Very good. I think you're not the only one who didn't understand it. It's just that the others didn't dare to ask. Let's figure it out together.

She returned to the board. She drew. She drew Sofiyka - a circle with pigtails and five apples next to her. She drew Tarasyk - a circle with ears and wrote: "two less.".

— Look, Nikita. «Two less» means that Tarasyk has less than Sofiyka. How much less? Two. And how much does Sofiyka have? Five. So, Tarasyk has five minus two. How much?

"Three," Nikita said quietly.

— Well done!

Elena Sergeevna looked at the class.

— If you still don't understand, you can ask again. That's okay.

By the end of the lesson, all three of Nikita's problems in his notebook were correct.

When the bell rang, Artem, a neighbor, leaned over to Nikita.

"Thanks for asking. I didn't fully understand either. I was just shy.".

Nikita smiled.

On the way home, Nikita told his mother everything.

"I raised my hand, Mom.".

— And how was it?

— At first it's scary. And then it's good. Olena Sergiyevna said that the question was good.

— Because that's how it is.

— And Artem said he didn't understand either. It turns out I wasn't the only one.

Mom stopped.

"See? Often, when you ask, you're not just asking for yourself. You're helping three or five other children. They're just shy.".

Nikita thought about it. He liked to think of himself as someone who helps.

From then on, Nikita raised his hand more often. Not always — only when he really didn't understand. But when he did raise it — he did it more firmly. Because he knew: a question doesn't make him weak. A question makes him someone who grows.

💡 Asking questions is the beginning of understanding, not a sign of weakness.

Nikita didn't understand the problem in math class.
