She sang at home while drawing, sang in the shower, sang when her mother was cooking borscht. Her voice was thin but sonorous — like a small bell.

Once there was a spring concert in the kindergarten. The older children — from the preparatory group — performed from the stage. The younger ones — Ulyana's group — sat in the hall and watched. Next to her was her friend Sofiyka, eating a tangerine from her pocket.

The high school students sang different songs. Ulyana knew the first one — about the sun rising over the meadow. She sang along quietly. She also knew the second one — about her mother. She sang along more clearly.

And then the third one began.

It was a new song. Ulyana had never heard it before. The words were strange: about a small grain that sprouted and became an ear of wheat, then bread, then in her mother's hands. The melody was beautiful—gentle, with repetitions. But Ulyana didn't know the words.

"Sofiya," Ulyana whispered. "Do you know this song?"

Sophie shook her head. Her mouth was full of tangerines.

Ulyana's teacher, Elena Mikhailovna, stood nearby and looked at her gently. She noticed Ulyana's face.

— Sing along, daughter.

— I don't know the words!

"Then sing along to the melody. Without words. Or a part that you've memorized.".

Ulyana thought about it. Sing along without words? Is that possible?

She listened a little longer. She noticed that the song had a chorus that was repeated. The words in the chorus were: "And a grain-grain, grow-grow." Simple. Ulyana remembered it the first time.

I didn't understand the verse. They sang it very quickly. But I could understand the chorus.

When the chorus began a second time, Ulyana quietly sang along with everyone:

— And grain-grain, grow-grow...

Her voice was tiny—she could barely hear it herself. But she sang.

Couplet - was silent. Listened. Payed attention to individual words: "earth", "rain", "sun". Memorized.

Chorus - she sang along. A little louder now.

The second time I read the verse, I suddenly noticed that I remembered a few words. "A little grain lay in the ground..." I sang along. The rest I was silent.

Chorus - she sang it completely, with everyone.

By the end of the song, Ulyana already knew half of it. And she sang. Not very confidently — but with joy. Because she noticed: when you sing, even if you don't know it completely — the melody carries you.

The neighbor behind me—some girl's dad—leaned over.

— You sing beautifully.

Ulyana blushed with joy.

When the song ended, the audience applauded. Ulyana clapped too. Her little hands clapped loudly — with happiness.

When they left the concert, mom came for Ulyana. Ulyana immediately ran to her.

"Mom, mom! I sang a song I didn't know!"

— How is that?

— At first I didn't know. Then I listened. I remembered the chorus. Then a little bit of the verse. In the end I sang almost everything!

Mom smiled.

— And before, you didn't sing songs you didn't know.

— I didn't sing. I thought you had to know everything to sing.

— And it turned out?

— It turns out you can start with what you know. And add to it.

On the way home, mom and Ulyana walked along the linden alley. The linden trees were still bare, but the buds on the branches had already swelled - in spring. Ulyana jumped over the cracks in the sidewalk and sang: "And a grain-grain, grow-grow...".

That line stuck in her head all day. She even told her grandmother on the phone at home.

"And I didn't even know all the words, grandma!"

"But does that matter? The main thing is that you didn't sit quietly.".

Ulyana nodded - although her grandmother didn't see it. And she thought that tomorrow in kindergarten she would ask Elena Mikhailovna if she could learn this song to the end. Because now she knew: new is not scary. New is the beginning of something good. You just have to start, even with one line.

💡 Courage is trying, even when you don't know the words yet.

At a concert in kindergarten, they sang an unfamiliar song.
