The same one — the bottom, front one. It had been for about three days. It was loose, but it didn't fall out. Marinka was twisting it with her tongue almost nonstop. During lessons. At lunch. Before bed.

On Tuesday, the tooth wobbled even more. Marinka looked in the mirror in the hallway - it tilted forward a little, like a tiny gate.

"Mom! Can I pull it out?"

Mom came out of the kitchen with a mug of tea. She looked.

"Is he ready?"

"I don't know. He's staggering.".

"Wobbles - it's not ready yet. Ready - it's hanging by a thin thread.".

Marinka turned to the mirror.

"And I want it now. Because I don't feel comfortable eating it.".

— Donya. Do you know why a tooth falls out by itself?

Marinka shook her head.

— A new one is growing underneath it — a permanent one. It slowly pushes out the milky one — like when spring pushes out ice from a river. The root of the milky one dissolves by itself. When everything is ready — the tooth will fall out easily. And if you pull it out too soon — there will be blood. And, most importantly, the new one will not know that its place is already ready.

Marinka grimaced.

— So how long do we have to wait?

"As long as it takes. Maybe a day. Maybe a week.".

— A week?!

— Or less.

Marinka sat on a stool. She looked at her tongue in the mirror — pink as a berry. A tooth flashed from under her lip. Marinka gently touched it with her finger.

"What if I can't stand it?"

Mom smiled.

"You'll make it. You're an adult.".

By Wednesday, Marinka had almost forgotten about the tooth. Almost. Only at lunch, when she was biting an apple on the right side, did she remember. On Thursday, the tooth deviated a little further. On Friday, Marinka noticed that she could now chew on both sides without any problems.

On Saturday morning, as she was washing her face and about to brush her teeth, something strange happened.

Marinka put water in her mouth. She rinsed it out. And suddenly, something small, hard, appeared on her tongue.

She spat it into her palm. There lay a white-white tooth. Whole. Without blood. With a thin, short root that had almost disappeared.

And in the mouth — where the tooth was — it's empty. Smooth. It doesn't hurt.

— Mom!!! Mom!

Mom came running from the kitchen, towel in hand.

— What?!

"He fell out! By himself!"

Marinka showed her tooth in her palm. Mom was happy with her.

— You see, daughter. Alone.

"And I was pulling it the day before yesterday!"

"And if I pulled it out, it would hurt. But I just rinsed it, and it came by itself, like a ripe acorn from a tree.".

Marinka turned to the mirror. She smiled. In place of a tooth was a small window. Her tongue shone through it.

- It's strange. Without a tooth.

— A new one will start growing that week. Bigger. Permanent.

— And how long will it take to wait for him?

"A few weeks. Maybe months. But he knows his time too.".

Marinka put the baby tooth in a small box — the kind that grandma's buttons used to be in. She hid it on a shelf.

— Mom.

"What, mine?"

"And I used to want everything to be fast. And now I think it's good that it's not fast.".

Mom ran her hand through her hair.

"Because you've understood something very important. Some things only know when they're time.".

💡 Sometimes you just have to live it.

Marinka had a loose baby tooth.
