He chose the violin because he had once seen his grandmother playing it in her youth, in an old photo. That photo hung in the living room in a wooden frame. The grandmother there was very young, with thick braids, in a white blouse, holding the violin under her chin and seemingly smiling at the person taking the photo.

When Artem picked up the violin for the first time, he was surprised at how light it was. Wooden, lacquered, with four strings and a bow with a white hair.

"Well, maestro," the teacher smiled. "Now we'll study.".

The first lesson was about how to hold the instrument. The violin should be placed on the shoulder — between the neck and the chin. Press lightly but firmly. Hold the bow with three fingers.

At home, Artem started practicing. The teacher gave him one exercise - the G major scale. Seven notes up and seven notes down.

The sound the violin made under Artyom's bow was terrible. Hoarse. Creaky. Sometimes like a cat being pulled by its tail. Sometimes like a knife on a plate.

Ten minutes later, my mother came into the kitchen.

"Artemchyk," she said cautiously. "Maybe that's enough for today?"

Artem himself was about to give up. He put the violin in its case.

The next day, the teacher gave a schedule: a quarter of an hour every day. No more. But definitely.

"A quarter of an hour?" Artyom was surprised. "And that's it?"

— And that's it. But every day. Without exception. Even on holidays. Even when you don't feel like it. Especially when you don't feel like it.

Artem returned home. He looked at his watch. A quarter of an hour is short. It's less than an episode of a cartoon.

From that day on, the violin played in Artem's room every evening.

The first week was terrible. Gamma didn't work.

The second week was a little better. Half of the notes fell flat.

A month later, the scale was already sounding clear. The teacher gave a second exercise - a song about a butterfly.

In another month, a song about the sun.

By the New Year, Artem knew how to play three simple melodies.

Five days until Christmas.

Until spring - seven.

Artem didn't notice how he was growing. He just came into the room every evening, opened the case, carefully rubbed the bow with rosin, and played for a quarter of an hour.

Only sometimes did my mother stop outside the door of the room and listen. And she would say to herself quietly:

— Oh, how beautiful it is now.

When a whole year had passed, Grandma turned eighty. The whole family gathered at home—aunts, uncles, cousins. On the table—buckwheat with chicken, baked potatoes, and cherry pies. Grandma was sitting in an armchair by the window, wearing a festive blue scarf.

Artem quietly got up from the table. He went to his room. He took the violin case. He came back.

Everyone fell silent.

Artem put the sheet music on the bedside table. He put the violin on his shoulder.

“Grandma,” he said quietly, “this is for you.”.

And he played.

The melody was old—«The moon shines brightly in the sky.» Grandma had known it since she was a child—Artyom’s great-grandmother had once sung it.

The sound of the violin was pure, gentle, with a slight tremor—like a real violinist's, not a child's.

Grandma listened and cried. Not from sadness, but from something else that happens to people when they hear something very dear.

When Artem finished, there was silence in the living room. Then everyone clapped together. Grandma got up from her chair, went over to Artem, and hugged him.

"Granddaughter. How did you learn?"

Artem shrugged.

"That's easy. Every day. A quarter of an hour.".

Grandma smiled—just like the young girl in the old photo.

— You see. The violin loves those who come to it every day.

That evening, when Artem was going to bed, he heard from the living room - his grandmother was telling her aunts a story about how she herself had once learned to play. Also for a quarter of an hour. In a distant village. A long time ago.

Artem smiled into his pillow. Now he and his grandmother had a secret in common.

💡 Small daily steps add up to a long beautiful journey.

Artem practiced the violin for only a quarter of an hour every day.
