It was thick, hardcover, with a deer on the cover. The book was called "Seven Nights in the Carpathians.".

Maya opened it in the evening, curled up in a chair under the floor lamp, and began to read.

The first chapter was about a girl named Olesya, who was going to the mountains with her father. Maya read it with interest — she liked the descriptions: the smell of spruce trees, the distant bells of sheep, the morning frost on the blades of grass.

The second chapter was about how they found the old cabin.

The third is that someone once lived in the hut.

The fourth is about how Olesya found an old chest in the attic and couldn't open it.

This is where Maya started to yawn.

“So when is anything interesting going to happen there?” she grumbled.

She read ten more pages of the fifth chapter. Olesya and her father went to the village to buy bread. They met old Aunt Paraska. They sat with her at the table. They drank tea with raspberries.

Maya closed the book. She put it on the bedside table.

"It's boring," she said to herself out loud. "There won't be anything there.".

The book lay there for a week. Then two. Then a month.

One day in December, Maya came home from school early — the school canceled the last lesson. There was no one at home. Mom was at work, dad was on the road. Maya did her homework, had milk and cookies for dinner. She was about to sit down to watch cartoons — but the Internet wasn't working.

Maya walked through the rooms. It was sad. It was cold outside.

Her gaze fell on the bedside table. There, dusted with dust, lay "Seven Nights in the Carpathians." The deer on the binding looked at Maya reproachfully.

Maya sighed. She wiped the dust off with her sleeve. She opened it to where she had left the bookmark—in the middle of the fifth chapter.

I started reading out of boredom.

And then something strange happened.

After five pages, Olesya found a key in the attic. After seven, she opened a chest. In the chest was a diary. An old one, leather-bound, written in small handwriting.

The diary belonged to a girl who lived here over a hundred years ago. And it had this story in it — about the Carpathian forests, about a small family, about a wolf cub she was leaving behind… that Maya had forgotten where she was.

When her mother came home from work, Maya was sitting in a chair with her legs under her and reading.

"Daughter, haven't you had dinner yet? Dad will be here soon, let's have dinner together.".

“Yeah,” Maya muttered, her eyes still on the page.

After dinner she sat down with the book again. She read three more chapters.

I went to bed with a flashlight so I could read under the covers.

I fell asleep at half past eleven, with a book on my chest.

The next day at school dragged on for an incredibly long time. She thought only about the diary, the wolf cub, and the key to the chest.

I finished reading it to the last page in the evening.

The book ended with Olesya and her father taking the diary to Kyiv, to a museum. And the wolf cub that that ancient girl had once left behind turned out to be the ancestor of an entire wolf family that still lived in those mountains.

Maya closed the book. She held it to her chest. Her eyes were shining.

I came into the kitchen. Mom was baking an apple pie.

— Mom.

— I'm listening, honey.

— And if I had closed this book halfway through, I would never have found out about the wolf cub.

Mom smiled. She wiped her hands on the towel.

— That's how it happens, my daughter. Books have one secret: they don't reveal the best right away. You have to be patient a little. And then they reward you.

Maya nodded. She looked at her small shelf of books. There were three or four more that she had started and abandoned halfway through.

The next day she took one of them.

This time, I decided to finish reading it.

💡 A true story reveals its flavor only to those who read it to the end.

Maya threw the book away in the middle - it was boring.
