Lessons came easily to her — she read quickly, did math well, and listened to stories about nature with her mouth open.

But Marinka wrote badly.

Her letters jumped around as if they couldn't sit still. The letter "a" came out uppercase, then lowercase. The letter "p" always had a crooked tail. The letter "y" looked tired and had fallen on a barrel.

When Marinka reread her work, she couldn't make out what was written there.

"Marinka," the teacher said, turning over the notebook with the red marks. "You need to be neater. Look at how your letters jump.".

Marinka nodded. But at home she wrote the same thing again.

"What's the difference?" she said to her mother. "I understand it myself. I understand my own handwriting.".

Mom didn't answer anything then. She just thought about it.

And a week later — on Friday evening — my mother came to Marinka's room. She was holding an old letter in her hands. The paper was yellowed, the corners were frayed. The envelope was already without a stamp.

"Marinka," said mom. "I found it. I want to show you.".

They sat on the bed.

— This is a letter from your great-grandmother. She wrote it to my mother—your grandmother—when she was studying at the institute in Kyiv. She missed her very much. Look.

Mom unfolded the letter.

Marinka leaned over. On the yellow paper, in blue ink, lay the words in even, beautiful lines.

Each letter is like a pearl. Each dot is in its place. The spaces between the words are the same. The lines are even, as if drawn with a ruler.

Marinka was reading.

«"My dear daughter! How are you there, in that distant Kyiv? Are you eating well, are you staying warm? We're already harvesting here. Dad is mowing, I'm knitting sheaves. The cow has calved. A small calf, white with a red spot on its forehead. They called it Zirka..."»

The letter was long. Marinka read and read. Her eyes sparkled.

"Mom. This is so beautiful.".

— Do you know why you were able to read so easily, without stuttering?

Marinka shrugged her shoulders.

— Because the letters are… beautiful.

— Do you know how long it took my great-grandmother to write this letter?

— How much?

— Maybe an hour. Or maybe more. She tried. Because she knew: my mother would be sitting at a desk in a dormitory, in a distant city, reading. And it was important that everything was clear. So that she wouldn't have to guess what was written there.

Marinka looked at the letter.

"So she was thinking about her mother when she wrote?"

— Yes. Each letter was her little love. Her care.

Marinka remained silent for a while.

— And when I write casually, is it like I'm not thinking about who will read it?

Mom smiled.

"Not exactly. You just didn't know yet. Now you do.".

That night, Marinka couldn't sleep for a long time. She thought about the great-grandmother she never knew. About her hands that tried hard. About the beautiful letters.

The next day, Marinka sat down to do her homework. She wrote the first letter slowly. Very slowly. Like a great-grandmother.

The letter "a" turned out to be flat, with a rounded barrel.

Then — "n". Equal sticks, equal connections.

Then - "a".

The first sentence took Marinka half an hour. But when she reread it, the words stood out as neatly as soldiers on parade.

The second sentence went faster.

The third is even faster.

A month later, the teacher returned the notebook to Marinka and said:

— Marinka, what happened to you? I enjoy reading your work. It's like you've been replaced.

Marinka smiled. She didn't mention her great-grandmother's letter. She kept it to herself.

And when her mother looked at her notebook in the evening, Marinka said only one thing:

— Mom. Now I'm thinking about who will read.

Mom kissed her on the top of her head. And she didn't answer. Because she didn't need to.

💡 Beautifully written is a small gift to the one who will read it.

Marinka didn't like to write neatly until her mother showed her the difference between a letter to someone else and a letter to herself.

["post-2269","istoriya","type-istoriya","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
