Quiet, thick, without wind. The yard looked like a big white pillow—even the benches were hidden behind the snow.

Ivanko was returning from a club where he had been sculpting figures from plasticine. He was carrying a bag with his creations in his hands: a teddy bear, a fish, and for some reason a green crocodile.

He stopped in the yard.

A small tree grew near the entrance. It was very young—in the spring, Dad had shown him that it was a Christmas tree that a neighbor had planted last fall. The tree was short and thin. The branches were soft and thin.

Now the branches were covered with snow. It lay heavy. The snow had stuck to them from all sides, and one branch had already bent so low that it touched the ground. And the highest branch—the one that reached up to the sky—was leaning to one side and seemed to creak.

Ivanko came closer.

The tree really was groaning. Not with a sound, but with that soft crack that happens when something is about to break.

"Oh," Ivanko said aloud. "You won't be able to stand it.".

He placed the bag on the bench. He carefully reached out to the lowest branch and shook it lightly. The snow fell heavily to the ground. The branch slowly straightened up, as if it had taken a breath.

Ivanko shook off the next branch. And the next. And another. Snow fell on his boots, on his jacket, on his collar. But he didn't care.

When all the branches raised their heads again, Ivanko took a step back. He looked.

The tree stood still, as if it were covered with snow. But it was still trembling. Because the snow was still falling—and in ten minutes it would be covered again.

Ivanko thought. There was a garbage can nearby. Snow will fall all night. The tree will bend again. Who will shake off the snow at night?

He took the bag and ran home.

“Mom!” he shouted from the threshold, without taking off his boots.

Mom came out of the kitchen with a towel in her hands.

— Ivanka, boots!

"Mom, I need some fabric. Big. Old. Something that won't hurt.".

— Why?

— There's a tree in the yard. It's small. It's breaking under the snow.

Mom looked at her son. She frowned. Then, without saying anything, she went to the pantry. She returned with a piece of an old sheet—something Mom no longer used because it was frayed in the middle.

— On.

Ivanko kissed her on the cheek (not very aptly - on the ear) and ran back into the yard.

The tree was already covered in dust again. Ivanko carefully shook off the snow. Then he wrapped the thinnest branches with a cloth — not tightly, but simply covered them. Like a blanket. He didn't tie anything on top — so that the tree could breathe.

When he was finished, the tree looked funny, like a furry ghost. But Ivanko knew that now the snow would fall on the fabric, not directly on the branches.

In the morning he ran out into the yard before breakfast. The cloth was covered in snow, but the tree was still standing. Not a single branch had broken.

Ivan carefully shook the snow off the sheet. He checked the branches. Everything was intact.

Every morning all winter he did this. He went out into the yard, shook off the snow, and adjusted the cloth. The neighbors looked at him strangely at first. Then the yardman, Mr. Mykhailo, said:

"You're doing a great job, Ivanka. I didn't notice that the tree was suffering. But you did.".

When spring came, Ivanko removed the cloth. The tree stood—no taller than it had been in the fall, but alive. All the branches were in place. The buds had swelled. Little green specks poked out of the bark, as if the tree wanted to say, "Thank you.".

After a few weeks, the buds opened into soft green needles.

This tree grew for many more years. Ivanko grew up, transferred to another school, but when he passed by, he always touched the lowest branch. And the tree, it seemed to him, nodded.

Because whoever is weaker, there is a helping hand. Especially in winter. Especially when the snow falls quietly, as if no one will notice.

💡 Whoever is weaker, that is why there is a helping hand.

A small tree in the yard was breaking under the weight of snow.
